January Capricorn New Moon

by Crystal Pomeroy

The first New Moon of each year tends to be in Capricorn, while the Sun is also in Capricorn, and most people respond to these currents intuitively as we consider our resolutions and direction for the next twelve months. Maya describes the special flavor of the New Moon in Capricorn in 2003 as being related not just to future, but to past goals, as well as to rediscovering that which is most deeply essential and transcendent.

For metaphysical work, this adds up to a deeply transformative time to set goals, especially when we use it in a way that questions our accustomed idea of aspirations. World events are expanding our understanding of the true meaning of globalization, which refers to a larger scope in our personal worlds and direction. We are being called to envision a panorama beyond our immediate, relatively isolated sphere, understanding our connection to all living beings and to a destiny larger than the brief terrestrial stay we call life.

A look at ancestral teachings will remind us of those spiritual roots which taught just this broader scope, and which tend to get lost in the daily routine of work, eating and rest. If we still our minds and listen, we can hear the call of the wise ones who spoke to the Great Spirit of which all beings form a part, or the Buddha who promoted the personal path of spiritual liberation on behalf of all living things. We need look no farther than the first sentence of what Jesus called the perfect prayer to again recall this essential connection. The opening sentence, “Our Father-Mother,” reminds us that a consciousness of unity, and inclusion of all other beings in our own prayerful intents, is the first step in opening to Spirit.

As we clarify our goals this New Year, let us remember the powerful time we are living. On the one hand, a very special New Moon in Capricorn takes place synchronistically during an era offering information to develop whatever spiritual aspirations we are willing to dream of. At the same time, we are clearly in an age that calls for us to include the good of the entire planet, indeed, of all planets, dimensions and other forms of life everywhere, as part of our own greatest good.

CAST A MAGIC CIRCLE FOR THE NEW MOON OF JANUARY, 2003

I. PRELIMINARIES

As this moon connects us to all of creation through our ancestral roots, it is especially timely to use elements of ancient, natural magic, which enliven our basic, primitive relationship to the Moon, earth and stars. Native American, or any native New Moon ceremony would be especially powerful.

I have integrated some elements from Wicca which connect our New Moon prayers to the cosmic environment according to ancestral methods.

Have on hand:

• Water

• A dish with sand, gravel, earth or whole wheat flour

• A white or silver candle for each participant

• Paper and writing implement for each participant

• Sage or a broom

II. PROCEDURE

1. With yourself towards the center, sweep a circle in a clockwise motion with a broom or burning sage, large enough to include all present.

As you do, decree:

I SWEEP AWAY ANY ATTACHMENTS OR ILLUSIONS FROM THE PAST WHICH WOULD LIMIT MY ASPIRATIONS.

I SWEEP AWAY ANY ILLUSIONS WHICH WOULD LIMIT MY LOVE FOR MYSELF OR OTHERS.

I SWEEP AWAY ANY ILLUSIONS WHICH WOULD PULL HUMANITY INTO ANY ACTIONS OR ADDICTIONS HARMFUL TO OURSELVES OR OTHER BEINGS IN THIS NEW YEAR.

I INVITE THE GODS AND GODDESSES, AND ESPECIALLY THE GODDESS OF THE NASCENT MOON, TO BLESS THIS MAGICAL CIRCLE, WHICH REPRESENTS THE NEW AWARENESS OF GOOD WITH WHICH I BLESS MYSELF AND ALL BEINGS.

ONLY LOVE CAN COME INTO THE CIRCLE OF MY AWARENESS, AND ONLY LOVE CAN GO FORTH FROM IT.

2. Sprinkle water around your circle, saying:

I WASH AWAY ANY ATTACHMENTS OR ILLUSIONS FROM THE PAST WHICH WOULD LIMIT MY ASPIRATIONS.

I WASH AWAY ANY ILLUSIONS WHICH WOULD LIMIT MY LOVE FOR MYSELF OR OTHERS.

I WASH AWAY ANY ILLUSIONS WHICH WOULD PULL HUMANITY INTO ANY ACTIONS OR ADDICTIONS HARMFUL TO OURSELVES OR OTHER BEINGS IN THIS NEW YEAR.

I INVITE THE GODS AND GODDESSES, AND ESPECIALLY THE GODDESS OF THE NACENT MOON, TO BLESS THIS MAGICAL CIRCLE, WHICH REPRESENTS THE NEW AWARENESS OF GOOD WITH WHICH I BLESS MYSELF AND ALL BEINGS.

ONLY LOVE CAN COME INTO THE CIRCLE OF MY AWARENESS, AND ONLY LOVE CAN GO FORTH FROM IT.

3. Each person can then sit comfortably within the circle, and write a list of the main goals they have had during their lives, including those that have changed, as far back as they remember.

4. Go over the following words three times, from the heart:

WE INVITE THE MOTHER SPIRIT OF THIS NEW MOON TO REDUCE AND CONSOLIDATE ALL OUR ENERGY AND CAPACITY TO ASPIRE, ILLUMINATING US TO REDISCOVER OUR MOST TRUE, ESSENTIAL GOALS.

5. Each person then lights a white candle, walking around the circle once while saying:

THIS IS THE SYMBOL OF THE MOONLIGHT OF MY SOUL, WHICH GUIDES ME THROUGH THE SHADOWS OF LIFE’S MYSTERY, TO CLEARLY SEE MY DESTINY AND THAT OF HUMANITY FROM WITHIN THIS CIRCLE OF LOVE.

6. Each person then burns the paper with past goals, and says,

I RELEASE ALL MY PAST IDEAS AND THOSE OF MY FOREBEARS TO BE TRANSMUTED BY LOVE AND FAITH, SO THAT ONLY TRUE LIGHT FOR MYSELF AND ALL CREATION REMAINS CLEARLY IN MY UNDERSTANDING AND CIRCLE OF AWARENESS.

7. Each person then puts their candle in the sand, gravel, earth or flour, while saying:

THIS SAND (FLOUR, ETC.) REPRESENTS THE EARTH I STAND ON, WHICH CONNECTS ME IN DEED AND CONSCIOUSNESS WITH ALL OTHER BEINGS WHICH ARE LOCATED ON THIS PLANET. OUR CONNECTION IMPEDES US FROM TAKING ANY ACTION WHICH MIGHT DAMAGE OR DIMINISH OURSELVES OR ONE ANOTHER. I CAN FEEL THIS CONNECTION, WHOSE FORCE NOW GROWS AND NEUTRALIZES ANY IMPULSE TO HARM OR LIMIT THE LIFE FORCE IN ALL BEINGS AND ALL NATIONS.

8. Each person then writes their aspiration for the New Year ahead, to paraphrase author Jan Spiller, imagining they’re 95 years old, at the close of this life cycle, and considering what they’d like that life to have been used for. Make sure to take into account spiritual aspirations.

9. Repeat together, slowly and with feeling, at least three times:

I join my intent to divine intent that I shall be happy forever.

I join my intent to divine intent that my loved ones be happy forever.

I join my intent to divine intent that those who bother or disgust me be happy forever.

I join my intent to divine intent that all Africans be happy forever.

I join my intent to divine intent that all Iraqis be happy forever.

I join my intent to divine intent that all Palestinians be happy forever.

I join my intent to divine intent that all those going through apparent challenges at this time be happy forever.

I join my intent to divine intent that all ecosystems in all dimensions be happy forever.

OUR INTENT IGNITES A NEW CYCLE OF HOPE AND CONSCIOUSNESS OF UNITY WHICH IS NOW GUIDING AND PROTECTING PLANET EARTH AND ALL CREATION, AND EMPOWERING OUR NEW MOON GOALS.

10. The ceremony is closed as all present embrace one another (or yourself, if you do this alone). Empower each embrace by decreeing:

As I encircle you with my love, all beings and nations embrace one another and themselves through us, and love is now victorious throughout the New Year which has now begun. I believe and expect the amazing good that is here for us now. I believe and expect the miracles that are already in the midst of us.
