February’s influences—astrological, pagan, and numerological—bring a promise of renewal. Sun and a New Moon are in Aquarius, sign of awakening. We are at the pagan portal of Imbolc, door of new life. Mars exalted in Capricorn makes major harmonies with expansive Jupiter, innovative Uranus, and magical Neptune, supporting us in retrieving the year’s promise as we finally make some headway with our plans. Mars gets refined and sweetened by his proximity to Venus. He’s following the planet of love through Capricorn and eventually joins her, only to be passed by before the month ends. In persistent proximity to the god of war, Venus gets involved with his other transits, bringing charm, romance and creativity to the mix.
Also, Sun will follow Pisces’ rulers, Jupiter and Neptune, into Pisces for the first time in over a century, optimizing the promise of fortunate Jupiter as he transits the sign of his dignity.
To make things more intense, the US will experience its first return of Pluto, planet of renewal. This is a vital reset for the US as a country and in a way for all US citizens and residents, whose personal paths of power are somehow entwined with that of the nation.
Adding numerology to the mix, the second month of 2022 brings us a festival of twos, a number related to the Moon, and that supports collaboration.
February begins on the New Moon portal, which is still in effect on Wednesday, February 2. This year, it’s 2-2-2022, whose pioneering numerology of 1 gives extra energy to Imbolc, also known as Groundhog Day. As I say in my upcoming article in Llewellyn Journal, this important goddess portal is the halfway point of the Sun’s ascent from Winter Solstice to Spring Equinox. The Mayans believed that sunlight now reaches into the dark earth, awakening the kernel of life that lies buried in the seeds of winter’s ground.
Like the Earth, the Goddess begins her return to active life. In some remote areas of the Mexican countryside, an ancient practice called “cuarentena” is still in use. For 40 days after giving birth, the mother stays indoors, resting and being treated to special, nutritious foods while she regains her strength. Imbolc, celebrated 40 days after Winter Solstice, marks the time of the Goddess’ Coatlicue’s recovery from giving birth to the Winter Sun. Like a human mother returning to marital and worldly activity, she now makes her comeback.
Before this date was assimilated by the Catholic Church as Candlemas, the Celts would build fires in honor of Brigit, a dynamic, multi-talented goddess who was at once poet, metalworker, and healer. In Celtic mythology, the Imbolc goddess has reunited with the Sun god, Lugh. Imbued with his light, she walks the earth, her glowing feet awakening the life in the soil. Ancient Romans lit candles in honor of Juno-Februa, “the purifier”. Mother of the god Mars, she could renew her virginity at will (chastity for the ancients being a vibration rather than a physical condition).
Imbolc is a great time to call on Brigit and the angels of renewal to increase our strength, our focus, confidence and joy. (I share various invocations and a ritual for this in my new book, Angels and Goddesses, Manifest your Desires with Angelic Intelligence.)
Between the New Moon, Imbolc and important harmonies triggered by dynamic Mars, the entire first week and a half of February is a time for key action.
One of the year’s very best transits takes place on Thursday, February 4, when driven Mars—exalted in Capricorn—makes a sextile to fortunate Jupiter in Pisces, sign of its dignity. Both planets are enthusiastic and extroverted. Both have a fiery side that can come on too strong. Their fire is now balanced by the cooling effects of earth and water signs, which support consolidated results.
If Mercury retrograde in pessimistic Capricorn has been blocking your confidence or somehow holding you back, this portal’s the time to jump back into action. Promotional activities, spiritual teaching, sales, activism, education and legal concerns can go exceedingly well, as can follow-up on a financial opportunity or almost anything related to ….
