The transits of March bring us back to basics. At the beginning of March, a Lunar Eclipse in Virgo helps us pick through the pieces left after last month’s Aquarius Eclipse shake-up. Venus, planet of love and values makes numerous aspects that spotlight self-esteem, finance and relationships. And Aries season comes in full force, energizing our work focus.
The Eclipse season has been quite a jolt so far. The meeting of tough Saturn with foggy Neptune, planet of addictions and spirituality, in confrontative Aries, has brought down gurus and drug lords. Masks are ruled by Saturn and Neptune, and these planets’ ingress in the sign of confrontation seems to be working with Pluto and the Eclipse in Aquarius to disintegrate facades of royalty and fame.
March (named for Mars, the god of war), starts with a change of sign for the feisty planet. The red planet, ruling Saturn and Neptune in Aries, and as the month progresses, also Venus and Sun, has a key role this month. Despite all the public revelations that have surged, there still seems to be a veil over it all, a sense of mystification. Mars’ entrance into surreal Pisces can make us unsure of our direction, and of what’s really going on.
Neptune also has a key role, ruling the Sun, North Node, Mars, Venus and Mercury in Pisces, a stellium that the mysterious planet conjoins along with Saturn, from the critical first degree of Aries. Despite the disappointment in the guru industry, we are still very drawn to the intuitive side of life. Dreams are vivid with symbols and messages, angels and light beings are coming through, art brings relief.
At the same time, there’s a purging going on, abetted by the total Lunar Eclipse in Virgo, sign of purity. Connected to the South Node this eclipse is primed to help us clean up our act. Like Elliot Ness busting a speakeasy, it breaks in on the swamp of addictions that are the underbelly of patriarchy: drugs, pseudo-spirituality, pedophilia, and the markets that support them.
The Sabian symbol for this Eclipse, shared in our Daily Success Guide, mentions the emergence of a figurehead. With this lunation two degrees away from President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum’s ascendant, could she be one such figure? Almost since she was elected, she received much criticism for her apparent lack of strength against the drug lords. Within days before the Eclipse, she promoted the capture of a major leader known as Mencho. And still, she takes a lot of flack. Thist may be inevitable with her natal T-square involving Mercury on the Midheaven, Jupiter and Wounded Healer Chiron on the descendant, and Pluto rising. In any case, she’s suddenly become much stronger in popular perception.
And not only does the Eclipse conjoin Sheinbaum’s ascendant. At 12 Virgo, it exactly triggers her 12 Gemini Mercury (one degree from the MH) and 12 Pisces Jupiter. Her public image is activated by this lunation. With her Moon at 28 Pisces, the recent Solar Eclipse made a perfect semi-sextile. She has a role to play in some of the current tendencies, and we can suspect that her bravery and that of the Mexican military (ruled by Virgo) is causing far-reaching ripples.
Another potential political Eclipse figurehead is Gavin Newsom. Like Sheinbaum, he has Virgo rising and Gemini on the Midheaven. Ruler Mercury at 11 Scorpio gets a sextile from the Eclipse. His North Node at 28 Aries took an exact sextile from the Solar Eclipse in Aquarius.
On a more personal note, we can check our own charts for these degrees and the houses triggered by the lunation of March 3. The life of an Eclipse goes far beyond the event, and we can identify patterns from three months before and up to three months afterward. February’s Solar Eclipse in Aquarius shook things up. The Virgo Full Moon brings to light the baggage of addictive and evasive tendencies that need to go. And we can more easily streamline. Its cleansing action can help us get our bearings as we get back to the basics of sobriety, service and self-care.
If this sounds low-key, it won’t be, not with the personal planets lining up to join Neptune and Saturn in passionate Aries. On Friday, March 6, Venus is the first to cross over. She moves out of her gentle, codependent mode in Pisces, activating the critical zero degree of Aries and fueling passion, audacity and competition. Women will emerge in leadership roles, and “determined” will be the new cool.
As Neptune in conjunction to Saturn is dissolving familiar structures, Venus comes along on Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, to join the historical conjunction. This begins to give us a feeling for a new, more gentle structure that we’d like to birth. Venus rules what we value and desire, as well as love and relationships, while Neptune seeds the vision of a more loving—and in Aries more assertive—dream team. Saturn strengthens our commitment to manifest it. If we happen to feel overwhelmed by all the changes going on, and we can capture the gift of this transit by journaling about the relationships that are dissolving and how we can imagine the new ones would be.
