For many, this situation represents a personal challenge. Neptune rules democracy, and with his emergence from the shadows of Pisces into the heat of Aries, we can no longer act like public life is somebody else’s dream. In politics and in other areas, we feel goaded, challenged, or poked into defining our position and acting on it. The last time Neptune entered Aries, in 1861, saw the eruption of the American Civil War. One of the defining social tendencies then was the tendency to take definite, opposing positions. Now, again, we rise from our collective and individual somnolence, pull our ideals out of our back pocket, and once more take a stand for freedom.
As we reach May, the worst astrological ***t has already hit the fan. But by no means is the fight is over. Although Mars is now moving away from the opposition to Pluto, that standoff is still in orb during the Scorpio Full Moon of May 12, triggered by a T-square with Mercury and reiterated by Mercury’s square to Mars a week later. So, the challenge is still active. As Mars moves away from the opposition, it still carries Pluto’s energy. And the red planet takes this intensity into his new role as ruler of Neptune, Venus and by late May, Saturn—all in Aries.
As Saturn marches through the last degrees of Pisces, the planet of strategy activates the anaretic or last degree of the last sign of the zodiac. This supremely intuitive point is next to another critical degree: the intensely dynamic zero Aries. From this cusp, Saturn sends us signs and synchronicities to guide our path for a new beginning.
As we’ll see a bit further on, Saturn’s transit through Aries can be an era of accomplishment. However, it will require effort, self-mastery and commitment to the long haul. We are getting a taste of these requirements from the beginning of May, and before. Challenging situations—those mentioned above and others of a more personal nature—have made us look at where we’re called to assert ourselves. Aries wants to click its fingers and get it done. But Saturn takes the long route: planning, discipline, organization, sustained effort. As Saturn reaches the end of Pisces, this planet of climbing gives us a glimpse of the mountain that Aries will want to rush up. We can size up the battles ahead, create a calendar, define our needs, strategize to strengthen our Neptunian spiritual resources and to build the Saturnian base that Pluto’s path of power will require.
