General Astrological Influences January 2024: Building for Freedom

By Crystal Pomeroy

This is not your normal January. Besides being the first month of the year, there’s an important shift into a whole new wavelength. Pluto the transformer enters revolutionary Aquarius. The planet of inevitable alchemy made an initial foray into Aquarius last spring. Now, however, January’s ingress takes place on the same day that Sun also enters the Eleventh Sign, empowering this sign of freedom in a deeper way.

Pluto, planet of shadows, is imbued with rays of awareness that will stay with him throughout his 20-year visit in the sign of higher mind. And Uranus, ruler of both Sun and Pluto, goes direct just days after this historic ingress, right on the power portal of the Leo Full Moon. Pluto, Aquarius and Uranus are game-changers. Their combined forces precipitate a transformational wave with a great potential for a new era of freedom, about which we’ll give more details below, and in a separate piece about the tendencies it brings for each sign.

First, a few words about another gift from January. While the transpersonal force of Pluto in Aquarius triggers a new era, personal planets support us as individuals in constructive action to create a secure, lasting base. Aquarius’ coruler, Saturn, has a lot to do with this energy. For a good part of the month, the builder planet rules Sun, Mercury, Venus and most importantly, Mars.

Mars will be in Capricorn, the sign of goals and discipline. The assertive planet is exalted in Capricorn, ready to push through doubts and distraction and cover new terrain. This new train will come as a relief, considering that Mercury retrograde and last year’s numerology of 7 may have left us feeling frustrated about dragging our feet or blocked about our results. Seven is a mental number, related to Mercury and Uranus; to learning, intuition and cognition. If you feel like you couldn’t consolidate something, look again and find the wisdom and other gifts received last year that will help.

2024’s numerology of 8—ruled by powerful Pluto—helps harvest the results of our previous efforts. The wisdom gathered in 2023 (of number 7) can be important, as is the force of Mars in Capricorn. Mercury, in post-retrograde shadow for most of the month, focuses on previous efforts, so we can finally get a handle on our efforts/results ratio. Mars in Capricorn will be especially helpful.

On Monday, January 1, Mercury stations to go direct, but the retrograde modality prevails for the first three weeks of January, until the messenger-planet emerges from post-retrograde shadow. Mercury, still in jovial Sagittarius remains in tune with the holidays, and favors connecting with people for a late New Year’s greeting or promoting something we launched before the pre-shadow retrograde started in mid-November.

Also on Monday, January 1, Venus, goddess of love and values, squares strict Saturn, pulling our head out of the clouds and putting our feet on the ground in affairs of the heart and purse. We can follow up on pending business and tweak thing that we at started previously, as we prepare for Thursday, January 4, when Mars, planet of action, makes his debut in Capricorn, where he strengthens our path of progress.

The Capricornian Mountain Goat is a peculiar animal. Where other beings would avoid the seemingly impossible, rocky slopes, the goat’s strategy is to throw himself against them, hugging the obstacle as he aims for the highest point. When warrior Mars gets in mountain-goat mode, the combination of drive, focus, courage, action, and persistence is unstoppable.
