Astrological Influences, August 2023: Building Our Runway

By Crystal Pomeroy

Astrological Influences August 2023

The stars of August help free us to a inhabit new phase of heart energy as we’re released from situations that don’t resonate with our values or our joy. Three major lunations take place in creative signs. Two of them are Full Moons, increasing emotionality. In Aquarius and Pisces, both relate to release. By month’s end, six planets will be retrograde, including Uranus and Neptune, rulers of the Full Moons, turning much of this month’s energy inward. What’s going on inside us is important. With most of the planets in earth signs, work and tangible progress are also vital. We feel ready to fly—and there’s a runway to be built.

When planets are retrograde, we can review their energies and integrate them into our personal growth. Of all the planets, Mercury and Venus are the closest to the Sun and the most involved with our daily activities, interactions, and enjoyment. In August, their retrogrades are an ongoing theme.

In its apparently backward movement, Mercury facilitates review of words and interactions and, directing our thoughts inward, self-analysis and self-dialogue. Venus retrograde leads to review of what we love and enjoy and where we invest our time, money, and energy. Venus in Leo questions how we use our heart energy. In one way or another we are redoing relationships: with others, with money, with pleasure, and/or with ourselves.

The last time Venus was retrograde in Leo was the summer of 2015. A look at the calendar (or your emails) from then may reveal a pattern or cycle that has to do with how you’re growing now. What would you have wanted to do differently with your love-life and energy then?

We now have the opportunity to reconnect with an updated vision of what feels good, of what we desire, and of what’s really beneficial for us. We want to release patterns that don’t resonate with this. Yet with Mercury in shadow and retrograde, some things need to be reworked, realigned and—darn it—rebuilt before we can actually walk forward in our newly freed heart energy.

As the month begins, the starwaves are already coming on strong in the form of the Full Moon in Aquarius, sign of liberation, on August 1. Sun in Leo has us feeling passionate about what we want to express and do.

Two strong lunar aspects the following week accentuate this push towards freedom.

First, a square from Venus to Moon’s ruler Uranus has us fed up with a type of interaction or a way of compromising our values that we’ve allowed to drag out. This is the last Full Moon in Aquarius before Pluto enters Aquarius, so the readiness we feel to release our chains is also part of Pluto’s upcoming escape from heavy Capricorn.

The godfather planet itself gets pushed into action by a trine from dynamic Mars. This courageous pair, in earth signs Virgo and Capricorn, can apply determination, focus, and organizational skills to railroad their way through obstacles and move ahead in work, finance, and other concrete changes.

Actions may in fact be easier than words, due to an early-month opposition from Mercury the messenger to strict Saturn that can seem to call our verbal alacrity into question. With Mercury about to go into pre-retrograde shadow, it’s worth making the extra effort this transit demands to…
