Astrological Influences January 2025: Prepare for Freedom

The New Year brings a slew of positive shifts, including sign changes for the Nodes, for Jupiter and for Uranus. The numerology of January is pioneering 1, favoring new beginnings. But, during this January, we’re mostly still recalibrating to find traction with our goals. January is named for the god Janus, whose symbol is a two-faced mask: one face looks ahead into the future, and the other faces back into the past. This is an especially fitting archetype for January 2025, with some influences that call us forward and others that aren’t quite ready to move.

Among progressive influences, innovator Uranus comes on strong. After testing the waters last year, transformative Pluto has finally, definitively entered Aquarius, co-ruled by rebel Uranus. A new era has begun, and freedom rushes along this month. Sun’s entrance into Aquarius, followed by the New Moon—also in Aquarius—marking the Chinese New Year of the Wood Snake and finally, Uranus’ station direct on January 30 accentuate the energies of the planet of genius. And as we will see, this planet of awakening even occupies center stage at the Full Moon in Cancer.

Other major shifts this month:

• The January 2 entrance of Venus into Pisces,
• Also on January 2, Mercury finally clears post-retrograde shadow and goes fully direct, and
• The January 11 ingress of the North Node into gentle Pisces as well, spotlighting a more compassionate, spiritual direction.

The track may be laid; the engine is not quite ready. Mars, ruler of number 1 and the “engine” or planet of action, is still retrograde, meaning that things, situations, and people are apt be slow and plans will need review. Also, the red orb will soon enter maternal Cancer, where his fiery thrust gets watered down.

Nor is this just any Mars retrograde into Cancer. As the month begins, and just as Mars is about to enter the water sign, he perfects his opposition to ominous Pluto. The contact is almost exact as the month starts, perfecting on Friday, January 3 and exercising a definitive influence as we move into the month. Mars is in Leo during the opposition’s exactitude, triggering issues of confidence, dictatorship and two choices: to fight with heartfelt passion, or from prideful ego.
