February is a month of renewal.
On his path towards the Spring Equinox, Sun reaches a mystical halfway point between Winter Solstice and the Equinox from which his warm kiss reaches deep within the ground, awakening the life that lies dormant in buried seeds.
For the ancients, this seasonal connection was embodied in diverse goddesses who renew productive and intimate activity at this time of Imbolc (the pagan name for this seasonal holiday). Some of these goddesses are the Celtic Brigid, the Roman Juno Februa, and Coatlicue, the Mexican goddess who, 40 days after birthing the Sun at Winter Solstice, symbolically returns to her daily activities. The goddess traditions live on in, for example, in the Purification of the Virgin celebrated at Candlemas, and astrologically via the sun sign of Aquarius, the awakener, whose symbol depicts the waters of higher light that flow from her pitcher.
Aquarius season comes on strong this month, thanks to Pluto’s recent ingress into the Aquarius, and the entrance of Mercury, Venus and Mars, who will all be joining Pluto as he slowly crosses the Water Bearer’s doorstep.
Pluto, the secret boss of the solar system, is pushing us to take up the power of our Aquarian freedom, and the personal planets ignite our mentality, actions, and relationships with this impulse. This pioneering energy is increased at 0° Aquarius, the point at which the personal planets will join with Pluto, where they will expose secrets and trigger situations that increase our personal experience of the new Plutonian cycle.
The things we put in place at Pluto’s degree of ingress can have a lasting effect, as illustrated by the Sabian symbol:
AN OLD ADOBE MISSION IN CALIFORNIA… The power inherent in all great human works to endure far beyond the workers’ life spans.…
…The enduring character of human achievements ensouled by a great vision. At least within the frame of reference of our Western civilization, the symbol speaks of the projection of a noble ideal into concrete forms of beauty and significance… THE CONCRETIZATIONOF AN IDEAL… the ‘immortalization’ of an individual within a great collective and cultural enterprise.
Aquarius rules freedom, brilliance, independence, ideals, life-mission, altruism, groups, and friends, reminding us that relationships, networks, and connections are key to following our dreams. This focus is reaffirmed by the role of love-planet Venus as dispositor of February’s stellium in the sign of the Water Bearer. (Venus currently rules Uranus in Taurus, and Uranus rules Aquarius.)
Venus in Aquarius is also in mutual reception with Uranus in Taurus, reaffirming their connection. Ironically, independent Aquarius is the sign….
Ah, the Aquarian paradox!
