With six planets in earth signs, a New Moon in earthy, practical Capricorn, and the ongoing overarching influence of pragmatic Capricorn, many of January’s influences emphasize material security and work. However, when we look for the stars’ most valuable gifts this month, we are guided to notice the importance of listening to, refining, developing, and using our wonderful minds.
This theme actually started at the Winter Solstice, the astrological New Year, so we can expect it to continue throughout 2021. January brings numerous opportunities to value our perceptual gifts, commit to them and elevate their potential. Using these opportunities requires that we value and apply these treasures.
The Great Conjunction of December 21, 2020 involved Saturn and Jupiter, the teacher planets, in Aquarius, sign of intelligence, knowledge and new teachings. I resonate with Mortimer Adler who notes in his classic, The Great Ideas, that learning is actually better when we’re mature; and when we stop learning, our minds begin to atrophy. The 20-year astrological cycle that began on Solstice was a cycle to make the most of the age of information and increase our knowledge.
This month, the stars fuel this mental energy. Jupiter and Saturn continue in Aquarius, and Sun and mental Mercury come on board in the intellectual sign as well. Aquarius’ ruler, Uranus, planet of higher and intuitive intellect, makes several major aspects and stations to go direct on the mid-month New Moon portal. Mental Mercury also makes numerous major aspects, before going retrograde—which prolongs his stay in Aquarius. With the North Node in Gemini, Mercury is important to new directions, as well.
In fact, the year’s first major aspect takes place on Friday, January 1, when Mercury in structured Capricorn makes a sextile to psychic Neptune. Reason, common sense and intuition work in harmony, opening our vision and facilitating strategic planning to ground our dreams.
To apply this gift dexterously we can:
- Write down our dreams for 2021, with special emphasis on the knowledge, communication skills, promotional activities, and spiritual gifts we wish to develop.
- Make a treasure map or vision board of our finished results.
- Create a calendar with projected dates of partial achievements along the path of consolidation.
- Make a list of resources, books, courses, actions and contacts that can support our progress.
From Friday, January 1 to Tuesday, January 5, Mars will be in Aries, its home sign. This enthusiastic placement boosts the head-energy associated with the Aries ram, and favors acting on some of the good ideas that have been pushing through our minds lately. We can always do the follow-up later, when Mars, the planet of action, steps into patient, determined Taurus.
On Monday, January 4, Mercury returns to the spotlight, joining the most powerful planet in the solar system, Pluto, who also happens to be in Capricorn. In Mercury’s New Year’s sextile to Neptune, our minds were inspired; now their powers are intensified. Thought and concentration go deep.
