July is a bright golden-yellow month of sun reflecting on glass, on sidewalks, and on the beach. This July, there are gray stripes across the yellow. Following sanitary recommendations, most of us will spend more time indoors, with less bright reflections and fewer beaches.
Beaches are the terrain of the crab, Cancer’s creature. Gray is the color of Capricorn, the sign of work and discipline, in which a stellium of Pluto, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pallas Athena make this an unusually serious month.
All but three planets will be retrograde, and Mercury is in shadow most of the month. The month’s lunations—a Full Moon Eclipse in Capricorn on Saturday, July 4, and the New Moon in Cancer of Monday, July 20, bring into relief the month’s contrasting themes. Cancer wants to nurture the soul, and Capricorn strives to produce. With Pluto in Capricorn, what we produce is a very big deal.
These contrasting needs and impulses are evident from the month’s beginning. Cancer Sun, its charge intensified by the recent Solar Eclipse, accents our sensitivity, making us want to relax (on the beach), to care for our intuitive, emotional self, to attend to the inner circle of home, garden, and kin.
Yet we’re still on the portal of the Jupiter-Pluto conjunction that was exact on June 30. Jupiter lights the fires of enthusiasm and fortune. It buzzes back and forth, retrograde and direct, like a large, busy bee around the small dark planet. It brings Pluto out of hiding, spotlighting the area of our lives where this planet of transformation has been slowly but inexorably chewing on our psyche, and as it does, tearing away obsolete patterns and lifting us to a new level of power.
Pluto brings change, and in Capricorn, sign of mastery, it demands work. A look at the area of our chart occupied by Capricorn will remind us of the situations where this has been playing out for each of us personally since 2008, when Pluto, mob-boss of the solar system, entered Capricorn, the sign of discipline and effort. Right when we’d like to be sleeping in and spending the day by the pool, this conjunction shouts: Get up! Try harder! Finish that project! Walk your talk!
As if this excitement weren’t excruciating enough, Wednesday, July 1, brings three dynamic transits:
