As the month begins, the fixed energies of Sun and Mercury in Taurus and an intense Full Moon in Scorpio reconnect us with our power and help us root it more deeply. The North Node shifts into Gemini, sharpening our perception and initiating a renaissance of knowledge and virtual connections.
By midmonth, most of the planets in the sky will have turned retrograde, making introspection fruitful, increasing skepticism of official versions of “truth,” and suggesting that quarantine will continue in many places. Then, Sun joins Venus, Mercury and North Node in Gemini, making the renaissance close up and personal as it fuels connections and brings our inner potentials to light.
As May begins, the Sun approaches one of its yearly power points at 15 degrees of Taurus. The middle of each fixed sign is a time of concentration and magnetism. In Taurus, we can direct this power to strengthen our nature as individualized beings.
The ancient pagan holiday Beltane, on May 1, celebrates nature. Sun merges with earth and water in a celebration of bright colors that, in the Northern Hemisphere, makes this one of Earth’s most beautiful—and comfortable—times of year. Yet the Taurus archetype has an inner facet. As a personal sign of substantiality, embodied-ness, its psychic function is to create security in the individual self that burst forth when Sun was in Aries. During the present time of contingencies, when our control over circumstances seems to have been wrested from us, it can be especially empowering to connect with the aspects of ourselves that we wish to make firm, and like foliage in May, root them more deeply.
As the month begins, Mercury too is in Taurus. Our thinking is practical and we can create frameworks for communications about business and finance. This is a time to organize our finances and creative projects, design communication strategies for business and profit and, in our personal relationships, express affection in tangible ways—by giving someone a massage, sending flowers, making or ordering a nice meal, and sharing money or opulent gifts. This placement is also good for music and guided meditations. Mercury relates to hands, favoring hands-on healing. A wonderful self-healing practice consists of touching one’s body as we bless, thank and embrace it.
When in Taurus, the messenger planet can make one feel a bit slow on the draw, but this ponderous quality can be applied to look at our words before opening our mouths, and align them with what we truly want to incarnate and manifest. The placement is associated with closed-mindedness, which can be offset as we remember that what we want to affirm is our current, evolving essence, not an attachment to circumstances or past versions of ourselves. So we don’t need to impose our ideas upon others, who are also in a process of establishing the ideas that give them security.
