April gets her name from Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, fertility and romantic love. It’s a month of renewal that in ancient times included the festival of Goddess Oestre, a facet of Aphrodite whose name is the root of modern-day Easter. For humans, the current health crisis seems devoid of the cheer usually associated with this verdant month, although the planet herself is enjoying a true renewal.
When we ponder the archetypes of the season and stars, we get an alternative view of Springtime. The month starts on the doorway of a Mars-Saturn conjunction that was exact on March 31. This aspect is comparable to having one foot on the accelerator and another on the brakes. It describes a lot of people’s quarantine experience, which will be intensified: We want to move, yet something holds us back.
In the light of the recent New Moon in Aries with Chiron, this is a great time for stopping to look at our masculine energy and how we can accept and direct it. Mars represents our ability to act bravely. We often neglect this gift, leaving Mars on a dusty shelf and taking him out only when reacting to a threat or when hurrying to get something done. We project Mars onto athletes, firemen and movie heroes.
As for Saturn, it represents a potential for inner authority, the impulse to mastery that strengthens us to do whatever’s necessary in order to build for self-reliance. Neglecting to assume our personal authority, we tend to project it onto challenging circumstances, figureheads and systems that limit us with their rules. Like Charles Chaplin in “Modern Times,” to some degree or another we’ve become cogs in society’s machine, moving in repetitive, automatic patterns with few moments of independent initiative or true self-mastery.
