Much as Cancer is considered the door of the soul, June in pagan calendars was the door of the year, a gateway to inner realms.
The month is named after the goddess Juno, who, according to Nigel Pennick in his Pagan Book of Days,
“has many attributes, the chief of which is the Queen of Heaven… As ruler of the time of maximum light… Juno is the light counterpart of Janus, the ruler of the New Year period… she is the divine watcher over the female sex, and… guardian of money and wealth.”
June’s Full Moon is known as the Strawberry, Mead or Honey Moon. This year, it rises as the month begins on June 2. As Dorothy Morrison points out in her book Everyday Moon Magic, with this Moon
“comes the sweetness of new life, metamorphous and transformation… we feel the need for change… and this often results in the fresh perspective necessary to start… anew. We find it easier to reinvent our lives and become the people we were born to be. Once that happens our personal realities follow suit.”
In the lunation’s chart, contacts with Mars, Neptune and Pluto indicate that transformation is apt to be passionate, mystical and at the same time active. Issues of freedom we were dealing with for the three years of the Uranus-Pluto square, which lasted through the end of March, are apt to resurface for final or continued resolution.
These influences activate our spiritual warrior essence, and help us evolve beyond victim trips. The theme is reiterated in the Sabian symbols. For the Moon at 12 degrees of Sagittarius:
A FLAG BECOMES AN EAGLE, AN EAGLE BECOMES A PROUD CHANTICLEER…
For the Sun at 12 degrees of Gemini:
A BLACK SLAVE GIRL DEMANDS HER RIGHTS OF HER MISTRESS.
Luna makes a T-square to Mars and Neptune, which can inspire intuitive action and trigger a creative breakthrough. It also warns us to guard against drinking too much of that mead or slipping into self-evasion.
The potential for perspective is enriched by a this month’s prevalence of retrogrades. Mercury is retrograde and in its shadow period in Gemini, favoring review of our thoughts and communications. During the first two weeks, Saturn retrogrades through the first degrees of Sagittarius, helping us hone in on the more flowing areas of our lives and build them into something. The taskmaster planet then backs into Scorpio, sign of the subconscious, helping us rebuild our power. Pluto is retrograde in Capricorn, pushing us to rework our relationship with authority. Then, on June 17, Neptune joins the club as it stations to go retrograde in Pisces, heightening our intuition and enriching our dream work.
Another shift comes on June 5, when Venus, planet of love, money and creativity enters Leo.… [Read the full article now! Become a Premium subscriber!]
