Autumn Equinox Portal, Mexica Morsel Ceremony

by Crystal Pomeroy

vernal equinox - mexica new year ceremonyThe Mexica New Year begins at the Spring Equinox. More than just another great party like New Year’s in the modern world, it is a portal of blessing for spiritual and physical fruitfulness. This New Year is called 11 Rabbit, relating to fertility and skillful beginnings. Ceremonies in neo-native groups are designed to synchronize with these gifts. Currently, another type of event is spreading throughout Mexico and beyond, invoking the Essences, or spiritual keepers, to stabilize the earth and protect her from the quakes and changes that are predicted to continue by certain scientists and apocalyptic ideologists.

Native ceremonies convey knowledge of primary spiritual forces, a legacy from ancestral civilizations that maintained a conscious connection with all beings, including the cosmos and Earth herself. Their artistry offers a link both powerful and poetic that directs our modern day desire for blessing and protection, as it stirs us to our own innate connectedness.

For the first time in English, we present this Mexica Earth ceremony exclusively for Daykeeper subscribers, enriched with metaphysical and angelic suggestions that provide an effective tapestry to begin the Year 11 Rabbit.

If possible, include friends or family from other neighborhoods, towns or areas. Their presence in the ceremony extends the protection to their place of residence. Ideally, they can repeat it at home, inviting people from other areas, and so on, making a chain of protection that expands into a global network. At our first Equinox event last Wednesday we had guests from different areas of Mexico and even a woman from Germany, who will take the ceremony to Europe on her return next month.

Materials to have on hand

Materials to have on a table or bench or special cloth on the ground at your Mexica Flower and Song New Year Ceremony:

  • A white candle
  • Salt
  • Tobacco
  • Rum
  • A whistle or bell
  • Copal or natural floral incense
  • A medium to large bowl with water
  • A handful of flowers in each of four different colors: white, red, yellow and blue or purple
  • Flower petals in each of those same four colors.
  • A large handful of green leaves or grass.
  • A round basket or dish of sunflower or other seeds
  • A picture or symbol of a rabbit (chocolate Easter bunnies are easy to find this Spring and chocolate also has magical properties for the Mexica)
  • A drum or record with rhythmic music, preferably with drums

Preparation

  • Prepare the flowers by crushing them with your hands until their essence or juice makes them wet, and then putting them in the bowl of water.
  • Light your copal or incense and candle and set them, along with the salt and water, in the center of the floor or open space where you will do the ceremony.
  • Sound the whistle or bell, to bring the presence of the air element into your circle.
  • Present the flowers to the Lord of Fire, holding them near the incense and candle while you say,

We hope you like this offering that is for You and Mother Earth.

  • Request permission from the 4 cardinal points, their essences and corresponding archangels, to make an offering to Mother Earth and bless her for protection, in the following manner:
  • The participants stand facing the east, one person holding the incense as another removes the yellow flowers from the water and sprinkles the water drops and essence towards the east. If there are more people, they can toss some of the yellow petals in that same direction. As they do this, all repeat:

Place of the rising sun that comes up to great us each day, of Archangel Jophiel and Essences of the east, we ask for your permission to make an offering and protection for Mother Earth, and that your illumination, intelligence and wisdom fill us.

  • Take a moment to connect with Infinite Intelligence, feeling the energy of the rising sun and listening to the angels rushing in from that direction.
  • Set the flowers aside.
  • The same person that took the flowers last time or another, takes the red flowers and repeats the above operation, this time sprinkling the essence westward, while another holds the incense and any other participants sprinkle flower petals in that same direction, as all repeat:

Place of the setting sun, of women warriors, of brave women, of Archangel Michael and Essences of the West, we request your permission and protection to make an offering and blessing for Mother Earth, and we also ask that you confer on us your valor and strength.

  • Take a moment to connect with the force of bravery, feeling the energy of the setting sun and listening to the angels rushing in from that direction.
  • Set the red flowers aside with the yellow ones.
  • One person continues to hold the incense, while another takes the white flowers from the water, and all face north, sprinkling flower essence and petals in that direction as you repeat together:

Place of rest and mystery, of life beyond the physical, Essences of the North, of our ancestors and protectors of portals, Archangel Gabriel and his hosts of purity, we ask for your permission to make an offering and blessing of protection for Mother Earth, and that you confer on us your astuteness and purity of intent.

  • Take a moment to connect with the energies of astuteness and purity, as you listen to the angels rushing in from that direction.
  • One person continues to hold the incense, while another takes the blue flowers from the water, and all face south sprinkling flower essence and petals in that direction as you repeat together,

Place of the Hummingbird on the Left, the Warrior of the South, He Who Runs with Speed, The Messenger, Place of Tlaloc, Essences of the South, of Archangel Raphael, we request your permission to make an offering and blessing of protection for Mother Earth and that you confer your achieving will power on us.

  • Take a moment to connect with achieving will power, as you listen to the angels rushing in from that direction.
  • Place the green leaves in the center of the floor and stand next to them as you say to the earth and sky,

Supreme, Dual Spirit, Giver of life, we request your permission to make an offering and blessing of protection for Mother Earth and that you confer on us your power to desire, imagine and create good alone.

  • All present now join in making a single design on the floor or ground, with the green leaves in the middle and the petals filling out a star, a cosmic cross or some other symmetric symbol. As you work, each can intone words like those that follow in song, in whatever melody or tone happens to come out:

May the earth stay in its true place, may the mountains remain standing, here and everywhere.

  • Once the design is finished, stand in a circle holding hands around the symbol and repeat together:

We awaken our connection with Mother Earth and the mountains and as we do, ground these sacred places.

  • Take a few moments to visualize in the silence that you are putting energy down into the earth, and holding it fast in place.
  • Each person can proffer a brief prayer of her or his own inspiration for Mother Earth.
  • Repeat aloud together:

May the supply of hope, clarity and sustenance reach all corners of the earth. We give thanks that any deviation from the original traditions are overlooked and our highest intention taken into account to insure the right results from this offering and these prayers for the good of all concerned, for the blessing and protection of this place and of the homes of all present, and of all places and homes that could not be represented here today, but that would like this blessing.

  • Play your drum or drum music and dance as your inspiration leads for five minutes or more.

11 Rabbit New Year’s blessing

  • Take a small amount of sun flower seeds in your hands and stand or sit where you can see the rabbit.
  • Mentally call on this animal to confer its creative fertility and power of multiplication on you.
  • Send this intention into the seeds in your hands.
  • In Mexica numerology, 11 is about a new beginning—"1"— that integrates acquired skills or learning symbolized by the number 10—related to the ten fingers you have learned how to use. Take a moment to choose an endeavor you would like to use this energy for, and send that intent through your hands into the seeds, asking that the fruits of your intents multiply in abundance.
  • Request that the essences and Archangels of the 4 cardinal points, of Earth and Sky, fortify and guide you to be still within but alert and focused like the rabbit and find the achieving will power and propitious circumstances to follow through on your New Year’s intentions.

Follow up by inviting all participants to use the Earth Protection Ceremony at home. Each can keep their seeds in a special dish or vessel where they will see it and remember their seed powers of 11 Rabbit every day.

Each season’s change is a power portal whose vibrations call our inmost self more fully into the dance of life. On a planet in need of blessing, we can follow the call and take part in this equinox as living bridges that reconnect the forces of our earthly and cosmic environment. Guided by the ancestors and angelic helpers, we invite the flowers of Spring to bloom across the planet and bring new life to our souls and hearts, affirming our certainty that any movement of the Earth can only take it to the One Place: Omnipresent Good.

Special thanks to anthropologist Xolotl for his wise and generous counsel on the Mexica traditions.
