Crystal's Autumn Equinox 2007

by Crystal Pomeroy

The Equinox is indeed a power portal, we can align with for our own spiritual development, significant success in service projects (vs. ego-based fantasies), and particularly to bless the planet in what could otherwise be a rather bumpy year’s close. There are strong aspects in the equinox chart, followed by intense transits throughout the fall. Does this mean we’re in for good times or bad times? Astrology shows us a spectrum of probabilities; the choices we make, whether or not we are conscious of them, dictate their expression in our lives.

Ancient peoples understood the importance of taking time out to synchronize with and bless each season as it began. If we follow their lead and make a space to connect with the highest vibration this coming fall can offer, we will discover its potential for spiritual growth, humanitarian values and phenomenal success in love-motivated projects. A bit further on you will find Equinox ceremony and prayer suggestions designed especially for this portal.

The pagan traditions around this equinox are compelling. For the Mexica nation it marked the beginning of the most powerful time of year: the Days of the Dead, culminating in November. This tradition sheds some light on the promise of Libra from a Mexican perspective: autumn is a time of stagnation, and sacred practice now focuses on aligning consciously with the natural equilibrium of light and dark that takes place during the equinox, a sacred initiative which harmonizes and invigorates the blood, offsetting the natural lethargy of the season.

The dark—whose prevalence will grow from now through spring—is not a neutral force. It represents the powerful realm of the invisible: the creative forces hidden within Tlalnantzin (tlalli-earth; nantli-mother; tzin-reverential, not to be confused with Tonantzin), as well as the worlds of the beyond, abode of ancestors and departed dear ones. Practices include self-purification and opulent offerings to these beloved beings.

These traditions are amazingly akin to Wicca’s Mabon, considered by some the most important time in the wheel of the year. It marks the entrance into the time of shadows, when the veil between dimensions becomes weak and magic becomes strong. Known as the Witches Thanksgiving, in many native traditions the fall equinox is mainly an occasion for gratitude, of which offerings to the earth as well as to the ancestors; form a focal point.

According to the dictionary, the roots for both gratitude and grateful, mean “more at grace.” The internal initiative of giving thanks from the heart opens a door for Omnipotent Grace to touch our consciousness and world. The miracle of the loaves and fishes attributed to Jesus is an example of the multiplying power that stirs when we praise what we have on hand, as does the Christ in that exemplary account. Many New Thought authors today stress the powers of a grateful mind, whether to heal a sick pocket book, an estranged family or a body that appears to be dying.

The Equinox chart points to healing our love nature, with Sun just into Libra, Moon conjunct Neptune, and Chiron in opposition to Venus. We are called to move beyond personal desires, addictions and fantasies about our past and present relationships, and rather focus on the most harmonious, compassionate energy we can ourselves generate at any given moment. More than a philosophically desirable perspective, this approach can connect our creative intent to the highest possible expression of 2007’s closing transits. (As well as spiritual practice like that suggested below, attending twelve-step groups for codependents or love addicts can be a major help in this process.)

Sun is now in a T-Square to the Mars/Pluto opposition, a combination that can be devastating if belligerence and vengeance are not held in check, and which, conversely, can lead to powerful results if this aspect is creatively applied in work initiatives. In October, Jupiter will square Uranus, potentially brilliant or regrettably explosive, depending on how we use the energies.

What do I mean by how we use them? One of the timeless truths brought home by the popular movie, "The Secret," is that we can and do create our own realities. Each choice we make to release conflict in our own minds will attract greater harmony and ease to our lives, whatever the rest of the world is experiencing. It may seem comfortable assume the opposite: that we are victims of circumstance. However, the truth of our co-creative powers will continue to be emphasized through the year’s end, with particular potency during and around the New Moon portal of December 9, which forms a stellium with Jupiter, Pluto and the Galactic Center.

This combination can lend great impulse to major life projects. On a lower wavelength, it can include moralistic and manipulative martyr trips, a pattern also suggested by the aforementioned Venus configuration in the equinox chart. How can we open to the best possible outcomes? The ancient tradition for the season offers a key: tuning our minds and blessing the season with gratitude will help us release the fixation for self-gratification that might otherwise trip us up. This focus can keep us in the flow of grace that will prosper our dearest projects. Most important of all, our inner harmony will contribute to the critical mass for peace on the planet, a blessing we can multiply with the miracle of affirmation, as we will see a bit further on. The following equinox magic is designed to channel these intentions.

Metaphysical Equinox Ceremony

In tune with ancient tradition, the following ceremony is designed to honor all those whose previous lives and contribution have blessed us. This reflection will put us a thankful state of mind, which we will then use to expand on and bless our dear planet.

1) Set your table with offerings for departed guides and dear ones whom you wish to honor now. Flowers in bright shades of orange and purple, are symbols of love that you can use generically for all those who have somehow contributed to your current blessings. You may wish to include food, such as dishes your loved one(s) especially enjoyed, or dried fruits and nuts. Be selective about which entities you invite to dine, though. Since they do respond to personal invitations, think about who you really want to have around. Also have on hand copal or rose incense to represent air, purple and/or orange candles for fire, clear quartz, amber or tiger’s eye if you wish to fortify the earth element (though it is already represented by the aforementioned flowers), and wine or grape juice for water. Also have on hand a large, new notebook that will be your gratitude journal over the coming months; with it, a nice writing implement.

2) As you light your incense, know that it is an offering for the wise and giving ancestors. Light the candle or candles while saying or thinking something like,

I call on the Angel of Gratitude to help me synchronize with the archetypal light of gratitude at this equinox portal, blessing my mind and soul with this awareness.

3) Put your hands on the notebook and bless it, with words like these:

I bless these pages as a new chapter in my life, born of my gratitude for all the blessings I have received and my intent to multiply all previous efforts on my behalf of beings in earthly or celestial dimensions.

4) On the first page of your journal, write a declaration of will, such as:

I choose to synchronize with the good present in the season, with the Spirit of Gratitude andthe will to make the most of the good I have received, enriching the legacy of those generous helpers before me.

5) Write your second submission in the journal: a letter of gratitude for one or more chosen guides, ancestors and/or departed dear one(s).

6) Read the letter aloud to the recipient(s).

7) Affirm some thoughts like these during ten to fifteen minutes:

I center my attention entirely on honoring those who have helped me, giving thanks for the fullness of blessings I have received. With a grateful heart, I bless the coming season and commit to concentrating on returning the good I have received with my inner and outer efforts to generate success and harmony for myself and for all others.

8) Close your ceremony by inviting your selected loved one(s) to eat with you, and then wishing them well as they return to their right activities in the current stage of their existence.

Stay in tune

Your journal will support you throughout this quarter.

1) Each night, send your ancestors and loved one(s) a thought of thanks, followed by a prayer. The following adaptation of a Unity prayer is simple and effective:

Spirit loves you, Spirit is guiding you, Spirit is showing you the way in this phase of the divine plan of your existence.

2) Then, repeat ideas like those that follow for several minutes:

Only for tonight, I release any apparent resentments or frustrations, and instead remember all that I have to be grateful for. My cup is full with all the good I have received in my past and present relationships. My grateful heart connects me with all other grateful hearts, and we surrounding the planet with victorious harmony and love now. As I sleep, I will receive angelic assistance to remain in this vibration and receive success in my life mission and projects.

3) Write six or more things you can be thankful for from the day now ending.

4) Make a list of pendings for the following day, next to each describing how you would like it to turn out, followed by any other blessing you wish to see for yourself or for the planet.

Thank you, dear reader, for reading this space, and more importantly, for fortifying the world prayer body.

Stay tuned for a blessing for the Earth at the upcoming Harvest Full Moon, and additional offering suggestions for the Day of the Dead.
