The Moon will begin a new phase with the Sun at 17 Libra, on October 10, 2026, mid-morning, Pacific time.
A New Moon in Libra speaks to recommitting oneself to love, loving, and better partnerships of all kinds.
Libra is our cardinal—or forward motion—sign in the element of air. With its glyph looking like a setting Sun, Libra is associated with (though not the same as) the Seventh House of the zodiacal wheel. The Sun on its diurnal journey, beginning at dawn, reaches the Seventh House at dusk. That’s the end of a work day, time to relax and seek enjoyment.
The sign of Libra is “ruled,” or more equitably speaking, “guided” by planet Venus. Libra is a style of loving aesthetic beauty in all forms, including in the airy realms of thought and speech.
A Libran personality may counter-intuitively find themselves drawn toward arenas of conflict because of an inherent desire to bring mediation and justice, leading to peace.
Venus in a birth chart speaks to our likes and dislikes. As one matures, one’s values become more refined. One learns to discriminate fairly, as in “yes to this relationship” and “no to that one.” Venusian values include how one relates to finances. What is worth spending one’s time and money on?
At this New Moon time, Venus is traveling in one of its regular six-week periods of retrograde motion (October 3–November 14). Retrograde motion means a planet appears to move backward and then forward, traversing part way into one sign, then back into the previous one, then forward again. Because of this retrograde period, Venus will spend more than the usual amount of time in Scorpio, from September 10 to October 25, and then again from December 4 to January 7, 2027. (Mercury will be in a shorter period of retrograde motion, from October 24 to November 13.)
While Venus is in a period of retrograde motion, it’s possible that everything one loves—and how one loves—will come up for re-examination. There might be odd synchronicities, like bumping into an old crush at the grocery store, or remembering something about them, fondly, or not so fondly. Or something seemingly mundane like revising one’s budget or schedule.
Scorpio is the fixed sign of deep, still waters. It is one of Mars’ home signs. Scorpio is edgy, probing, unsatisfied with superficial things. Scorpio may be willing to take a risk, break a taboo, peak behind the veil. It’s no coincidence that Scorpio season includes Halloween/ Samhain/the Days of the Dead, when distinctions between night and day are said to blur and thin.
Venus, ruler of peace-loving Libra, isn’t all too comfortable when traveling through the sign of Scorpio. But there’s no avoiding it. While Venus moves back and forth in Scorpio and Libra over the next couple of months, one might come face-to-face with the gunk and yuck of one’s own shadowy aversions, as they rise to clearer consciousness, saying something like: Look over here. Don’t look away.
Mars, too, is very much in the mix at this October 10 New Libra Moon. Mars, now in fiery Leo, is moving toward a harmonious trine aspect with Saturn, the great Teacher of maturity, which includes how to set and hold safe boundaries.
Mars in Leo is like a driving force of passion, including romance. At the October 10 New Moon, Mars will be making a precise 90-degree tense square to Venus, adding pressure on the menu of things to not look away from. Mars is also separating from a volatile opposition it made with Pluto last week (exact on October 3). Pluto at 3 Aquarius, square to Venus, adds dynamics of power struggles to the symbolic pressure on Venus.
This t-square with Venus at 7 Scorpio may be felt most intensely by people who have personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) in the early degrees of fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius). Everything related to love and loving is, metaphorically speaking, “itchy” and up for review.
None of this is easy. Yet while the Sun and Moon are conjoined in Libra, there is no better time to consider and revise one’s own patterns, so as to bring more abundant love, inside and out.
Blessings for the Libra New Moon!
