Gemini New Moon: Hearts and Minds

By Sara Diamond

A silhouetted figure with a glowing heart stands against a colorful, abstract background under the Gemini New Moon, with a crescent moon shining on the left—symbolizing the harmony of hearts and minds.

The Moon begins a new phase with the Sun at 24 Gemini on June 14 at 7:53 p.m. Pacific time.

Gemini is our mutable air sign, its style one of insatiable curiosity. All of the air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) want to talk and socialize. Gemini is especially chatty and open to what’s new.

The glyph for Gemini looks like a Roman numeral II. Its totem creature is the twins. Often dubbed as being “two-faced,” Gemini might seem tricky, or flighty, might even fudge about the truth. More skillfully, Gemini’s power is to hold two or more ideas in mind at the same time, like a mental gymnast, juggling invisible thought bubbles against a blue sky.

When the Sun is in Gemini—and especially at a new Gemini Moon—it’s an optimal time to soothe oneself with something mentally exciting, like curling up with a new book, just for fun.

Gemini’s ruling planet is Mercury, which travels close to the Sun and is never more than one sign away. Whilst the Sun’s been in Gemini since May 21, on June 1 Mercury scooted into the sign of Cancer, where it will travel until August 9. June, July and into early August will be an unusually long time for Mercury to spend in a single sign, and it’s because Mercury will travel backward through degrees of Cancer between June 29 and July 25.

When Mercury makes its annual sojourn through Cancer, whether for a few weeks or longer, as it will this year, one’s thoughts may take on a heightened emotional valence. Mercury is the planetary force of perception and interpretation. Cancer is water moving forward, like a river, unimpeded and sometimes overwhelming.

Cancer, the crab, can be prickly because Cancer seeks self-protection and emotional healing. Of the water signs, Cancer is the one most fixated on the past. In birth charts, people with Mercury in Cancer (I’m one) are the family historians, the writers of memoir. For better or worse, Mercury in Cancer does not forget words and images. They stick in the mind.

While Mercury (the mind) travels in Cancer (the heart) this summer, the most appealing acts of healing may be things like journal writing or sending a letter to a long lost friend. The weeks between June 29 and July 25, when Mercury will be retrograde in Cancer, will be ideal times for introspection, for keeping oneself emotionally safe, and for noticing the intuitive downloads that come from listening to one’s inner voice.

Soon after the June 14 Gemini New Moon, a major transit begins on June 19: asteroid Chiron will change signs, moving from Aries into earth sign Taurus. Chiron has a weird, elliptical orbit and changes signs only about every four to eight years.

Chiron in earth sign Taurus prompts sensitive questions about physical beauty, money, possessions, self-worth and esteem. Chiron’s transit through Taurus, from 2026 to 2034, will correlate with a collective focus on rehabilitating our wounded home planet Earth.

The June 14 New Moon in airy Gemini comes just a week before the Solstice, marking the time when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky (and lowest down south) and stands still for a short while at this pivot-point in the cycle of the year.

Blessings for the Gemini New Moon and the June Solstice!
