Gemini Full Moon 2025: A Full Cold Moon

By Sara Diamond

We will have the last Full Moon of 2025, and the last of the “super” Moons appearing larger than normal, on December 4 at 3:14 p.m. Pacific time, at 13 Gemini. This one’s called the Cold Moon, as the December solstice approaches.

When the Sun is in fire sign Sagittarius, the Moon is in the opposite sign of Gemini, an air sign. Gemini’s domains are the life of the mind and a feeling of insatiable curiosity. How much information, how many books, are too much? The answer for Gemini: there can never be too much, or too many.

Gemini’s style can be chatty, witty, seemingly superficial. But underneath Gemini’s frivolity is a serious drive for acquiring knowledge and sharing it.

What it all means, what the value of knowledge is—that’s Sagittarius’ turf. Gemini and Sagittarius are perfect opposites. Gemini wants to tell a good story. Sagittarius wants to take that story and make it into a motivating myth, a parable, something that inspires people to have faith and to do purposeful things.

When the Moon is full in Gemini, it’s a good time to reflect on the stories we tell, to ourselves, and to others. Are our stories true? Do they matter? What’s the difference between learning facts and cultivating wisdom?

Gemini’s ruling, or guiding, planet is Mercury, which is now moving direct, within the last decan (ten-degree span of a sign) of deep-water Scorpio. Mercury in Scorpio, as I’ve written before in these essays, is like an investigative reporter digging down into murky terrain, to bring what is hidden into the light of day.

Transiting Mercury, this season and through the end of the year, is part of a months-long aspect called a Grand Water Trine involving Jupiter (big purposes) in the nurturing, sensitive waters of Cancer, and Saturn (limits) in the boundless ocean of Pisces.

The Gemini Full Moon and the Sun in Sagittarius form a polarity of ideas and beliefs. But at this time, all the learning one might do under the Gemini Full Moon is neither dry nor objective, as the Grand Water Trine forms a watery backdrop. Everything is emotionally laden right now. It can feel like too much.

Fortunately, Gemini, as an air sign, is a cerebral style of being that can moderate excessive emotionality. Gemini’s glyph looks like a Roman numeral II. Gemini represents duality, the choices one is constantly obliged to make between this-and-that. To solve the dilemma of too many options, one is called to develop the power of discrimination, to step back, Sagittarius-style, to see the big picture, to recognize what’s important.

Every year about this time, the Moon and Sun are opposite each other, in Gemini and Sagittarius. This year is different, though, because in 2025, at the December 4 lunation, the Sun and Moon will form squares to the Moon’s nodes, which are currently at 13 degrees of Virgo and Pisces. The Moon’s nodes are the invisible points in the sky where the Moon’s orbit intersects with the Earth’s path around the Sun. These points shift signs every 18 months, forming an oppositional axis that has been studied in many traditions of astrology as symbols of our collective pasts and unknown futures.

A square is an aspect of friction that, if handled well, facilitates growth. But the square demands adjustment and even surrender to something one would rather do without.  At the December 4 lunation, the Moon in Gemini and the Sun in Sagittarius will form a mega-square, called a Grand Cross, with the lunar nodes in Virgo (discriminating wisdom) and Pisces (boundless compassion).

This Full Moon Grand Cross speaks to an imperative to learn and think in ways that aren’t easy, to digest knowledge into something way beyond just-the-facts, and to do so in ways that are precise and ethically pure (Virgo) and with intention for selfless service (Pisces).

That’s a tall order. Maybe beyond possible. But worth a try.

Blessings for the Gemini Full Moon!
