Affirmative astrology for challenging times

Leo Full Moon, February 2023: A Blaze of Lightning

By Sara Diamond

Leo Full Moon, February 2023

The February 5 Leo Full Moon highlights the polarity between the Leo Moon and the Aquarius Sun.

Leo is the fixed fire sign. It’s steady, reliable, like a burning ember. It’s associated with personal charisma and a draw toward romance, recreation, and drama. Leo, the lion, has a high-volume mane—fitting for his or her royal majesty—and wants everyone to notice. Like the sign that precedes it, Cancer, Leo is individualistic, whereas Leo’s opposite sign, Aquarius, is more entwined with collective endeavors. If Leo is a performer on stage, Aquarius brings an audience.

Leo’s ruling planet is the Sun. When the Moon is full in Leo once a year, it’s like a bright ball of fire shining on one’s drive for creative self-expression. At this Leo Full Moon, you might feel an urge to do something way-out that will attract attention and entertain everyone around you.

At the February 5 lunation, the Moon will be just past an encouraging sextile with Mars. A 60-degree sextile aspect is harmonious, but it’s more of an invitation than a done deal. With the Moon in Leo, and Mars now moving forward in Gemini, our creativity may land in the Geminian realms of writing, storytelling, singing, or cracking jokes. It’s light-hearted and fun. And that’s good because Mars has recently been in a friction-brewing square with Venus, with the potential for some relationship spats.

On February 5, the Leo Full Moon will also be just past a facilitating 90-degree trine aspect with Chiron, the asteroid symbolic of where and how we are wounded and also healing. Chiron and magnanimous Jupiter are currently together in forward marching Aries. With Chiron trine to the Leo Moon, there’s a call to do something big, brave and healing.

The tightest aspect of the February 5 Full Moon is the t-square formed by Uranus in Taurus with the Sun and Moon. When any two planets are traveling approximately 90 degrees apart, that’s a square. It’s a pressure point, like two planes of reality coming at each other in an irresolvable way, and yet the energy of each simply must accommodate the other. With a t-square, two bodies opposed to each other—here, it’s the Sun and Moon—are also forming squares with a third body, yielding maximum pressure on the apex planet, in this case, Uranus, a star of the February 5 lunation.

Far-flung Uranus travels an 84-year orbit around the Sun. It has been in the fixed earth sign of Taurus since 2018 and will stay there until 2026. Uranus symbolizes breakdowns and break-throughs. For us earthlings as a collective, Uranus’ sojourn through Taurus has been timed with one worldly shake-up after another, from climate catastrophes, to the pandemic, to soaring price hikes.

Yet on the personal level, there’s another way to think about Uranus in Taurus in the light of the February Full Moon. We know that the Taurus imperative is for material comfort and abundance, not just for the sake of having a lot of money and stuff, but instead, to maintain a feeling of safety. With Venus as its guide and goddess, Taurus loves beauty and is grounded in beauty. Uranus is a wild card, a blaze of lightning. Who knows what may happen next?

Upon this Full Moon, let us be open to the possibility of being awe-struck by some great sight and sound of beauty, coming from nowhere, out of the blue.

Blessings for the Leo Full Moon!
