Turn on the Healing Power of Loving Service and Get on the Right Side of the Tiger
This lunation delivers a different kind of Valentine. In Aquarius, the sign of altruism and fraternal love, it closely conjuncts Neptune, emphasizing the water bearer’s most humanitarian tendencies, and Chiron, who joins with Neptune to head up the solar system’s department of healing.
The New Moon also marks the Chinese New Year of the Metal Tiger, in which actions will speak more loudly than words.
We can synchronize with the gift of this portal by exploring the healing power of loving service. More than just a philosophical truism, we have in our hearts and hands a balm whose magic has been scientifically demonstrated. Since Aquarius and Mercury both rule science, with Mercury the messenger currently in Aquarius, this is an apt window to share some of the findings.
In a study done at Harvard, a group of postgraduate students watched a film of Mother Teresa attending indigent patients. The students’ immune function was measured before and after witnessing these scenes, with an immediate, notable improvement in all cases (including for those subjects who said they didn’t particularly cotton to the Nobel Laureate). Several compatible studies have been done by the Heartmath Institute in Boulder, California, showing the physiological effects of selfless love. The results have been extensively documented and confirm the benefits of this, the most generous of all emotional attitudes, not only for the immune function, but for the heart and brain, among other important health factors.
The healing potential of heartfelt kindness applied to service activities is confirmed in a case documented by Linda Goodman, in her book, Star Signs. A young man contracted an irreversible disease which doctors said would soon cause total paralysis. He decided to make a change in the few months of active life that he had left, giving up a lucrative job and going to work with disabled children for a tiny sum that barely covered his expenses. A bit further on we’ll see the results of acting on his most altruistic instincts.
The Year of the Tiger is predicted to be one of great change and a natural ferocity that is accented in the yang element of metal. It’s a good time to remember that loving service can even tame wild cats, as Kevin Richardson, a zoologist and animal behavioralist has proven with his groundbreaking work in South Africa. An anonymous reporter explains:
To do this he does not use the common methods of breaking the animal’s spirit with sticks and chains, instead he uses love, understanding and trust… he sleeps with lions, cuddles newborn hyenas, swims with lionesses… Kevin can confidently look into their eyes, crouch to their level and even lie down with them… he has been able to tame and handle beasts that… [trigger] our deepest fears.
As for the young man sentenced by doctors to total paralysis who went to work with disabled children, Linda Goodman tells us that at first the children’s joyful response to his attentions seemed to help take his mind off the pain caused by his condition. “Three months after he began working with the crippled children he noticed his pain had substantially subsided, and a couple of weeks later he had no sensation of discomfort at all…. “ New tests were done, and, “his amazed doctor told him that all the signs of fatal disease had disappeared.” Goodman uses this case of spontaneous remission to illustrate the law of karma, whose operation comes to light now, with Saturn, lord of karma in Libra, sign of justice.
Loving service is a healing gift, especially to the giver. Whether the restoration we seek is physical, emotional, spiritual or financial, we can move our energy circuits to a higher level and receive a greater portion of the good we long for by starting a new cycle of giving. The meditation, affirmations and angelic invocations we share further on are designed to capture the power of this lunar moment and bless our sweet Earth at the entrance to the Year of the Tiger.
Prayerful altar-ations (touches to connect your sacred space or circle with the energies of the New Moon)
- Candle or candles in shades of mauve, violet or electric blue
- Incense, sandalwood or jasmine
- Geraniums
- Rosemary Infusion
- Tiger eye, amethyst, zircon, turquoise
- Water Violet (Bach flower essence)
1. Light your candle, saying,
“I turn on the light of unselfish love in action, opening a direct channel to give the planet my valentine of loving service.”
2. Light your incense consecrating it as an offering for the Angel of Love in Action and the Angel of Solar Will Power, and ask for their assistance to make good on your intent to serve the higher good.
3. Decide on a way you can serve unselfishly. Use your imagination and choose something fairly easy, that you can start right away, since not only intent but acting generously is the essence of this cycle. This could be through working in a kitchen for the homeless, writing letters to congress, increasing the amount of time dedicated to prayer for others, visiting and/or assisting the elderly, helping out at a community or spiritual center, or any other activity that intuitively calls you and is fairly easy to begin and sustain throughout the new lunar month.
4. Repeat the following affirmation during five minutes now, repeating each morning from now until the next New Moon.
I invite Higher Love to beautify the world through my selfless actions, which connect me with the highest and the best in the Year of the Tiger, whose changes will only bring good to my personal and planetary family. The energy of my loving service connects me with others that serve with love around the planet, harmonizing and healing the entire world now.
The energy of this lunation invites us to send a different kind of valentine, not designed for human eyes, but an angelic missive expressed in actions whose heartfelt touch can heal more things than we imagine. Chaos physics shows that each day we make choices that, like the flapping wing of a butterfly, influence all future outcomes for ourselves and the universe we inhabit. As we demonstrate our will to Good, committing to kind service and sustaining it throughout this lunar month, a mantle of wellness embraces our beings from on high, strengthening the circle of grace around the planet and helping to tame our inner and outer tigers.
