Winter Holiday Portal 2008

by Crystal Pomeroy

The East Cherokee prayer bundle and the Mexica Solstice Sun Charge are two stunning, ancestral methods of synchronizing with the Winter Holiday portal. The prayer pack method is based on an East Cherokee tradition, and is used when something special is needed to break limitations, especially at the New Year. As we begin an annual cycle with dire predictions for financial systems, the global climate and martial escalation, now can be considered such a time.

As for the Mexica Solstice Sun Charge, it provides an alternative for connecting with the best possible expression of the conjunction of Sun, Pluto and Mars in Capricorn at the Winter Solstice, which sets the tone for 2009. Our brightest luminary provides the will to apply the plutonian potential for transmuting Capricorn’s limitations, along with a context that compels us to apply that strength. A bit further on, you will find instructions for this solar ceremony, which have been adapted to the astrological requirements for 2009. Both traditions open us to assistance from invisible realms, and they balance one another: emphasizing opposite cardinal points and genders.

The Prayer Bundle

The first time I made the prayer bundles, I admit to having been a bit skeptical. Not only did the results turn out to be surprising, but striking synchronicities arose, during, before and after my friends and I carried out the ceremony. We became convinced that the Native American spirit realms were activated and responding. Since that time, I learned that the pagan use of cardinal directions in such rites actually responds to an antediluvian knowledge of four original forces behind creation, each associated with one of those points and one of the four archangels. (Ancient symbols, depicting these four forces, can be found in Peter Thompson’s monumental book, The Mysteries of the Mexican Pyramids.)

Materials to have on hand for each participant:

  • An approximately 4" x 4" square of blue cotton material (or cotton mix).
  • A fifteen-inch (or longer) strand of blue or red yarn.
  • Three pinches of cornmeal.
  • A slip of paper.
  • A feather.

Each person should also have their own gifts for the spirit of the West, (which is related to inner knowing, emotions, right brain functions). These can be natural or personal objects such as a very special shell, crystal, piece of wood or jewelry, and so on.

To quote the East Cherokee source for most of the bundle instructions, "Remember, you're asking the spirit of that direction for catalyzing help; so don't be "stingy" about your gift or gifts. What you put out, you receive in return."

Making the Prayer Bundle

1. Light your incense and candle, and, facing the West, call on Native Guides and Spirits, which may include for this ceremony Grandmother Deer, Grandmother Medicine Bear, and the Great Spirit, as well as your own favorites.

2. On one side of the slip of paper, concentrate fully as you write a decree to the effect that:

"Love is present in me and my life, guiding my application of will and power in 2009 for the most constructive results for all concerned. Love now accompanies every inhabitant of Earth, guiding personal and collective application of will and power in 2009 for the most constructive results for all concerned.”

3. On the other side of the paper, write a personal wish or intention whose completion reflects a breakthrough, a significant freeing from apparent limitation.

4. Wrap your prayer slip, gifts and three pinches of cornmeal in the piece of blue cloth and tie closed, with your feather on the outside (to take your prayers flying), with a piece of yarn.

5. Give thanks that the guides and spirits are assisting you and all beings in releasing any tendency towards guilt or blame, and that they and the Great Spirit are now moving in your consciousness and in all creation to express loving, peace-filled outcomes now.

6. Take your prayer bundle to the most natural woodsy or bushy area you can find, and after requesting permission to do so from your favorite leafy friend, tie it to a branch on the west side.

7. Interestingly, this prayer bundle is said to begin showing results within two weeks, if your free will can choose them. Given this time frame, it would be most effective along with a daily affirmation for receiving your highest good during the remainder of this Moon Cycle (two weeks), such as, "I receive the positive will power and answered prayer that Spirit has brought forth now. I envision the entire planet being filled with positive will power that is streaming to it from the Newborn Sun now."

The following ceremony provides a lovely option to connect with the Winter Sun, as well as balancing the energies of the prayer packet, which are strongly feminine in nature.

Mexica Winter Sun Charge

To connect with the willpower of the Newborn Sun.

Have on hand:

  • Amber
  • An image of Archangel Michael, the Sun, the Infant Jesus and/or other representations of the Divine Child
  • A red candle
  • A stick of incense, preferably copal scent

1. Light the incense, knowing that it is an offering for angels and guides, such as:Archangel Michael, The Angels of the Sun, The Angel of Will Power, the Guardians of Higher Good, and any other invisible assistants of your choice.

Then say something like:

With angelic protection, we (I) synchronize with the highest and the best of solstice and Christmas traditions worldwide in our (my) intention of discovering and increasing my (our) positive will-power.

2. Light your candle, saying something like:

This fragment of sunlight invokes you, Precious Child (think of the Sun, the Christ Child, or other solar metaphor of your preference), whose light now shines on the world within, helping us see the areas in which to direct the charge-force of will power we are about to receive.

3. Face East, preferably in view of the early morning Sun, stretch your arms and hands upward towards it, and spread your fingers open as the Mexica masters did.

4. Imagine and feel the sun rays entering through the spaces between your fingers, shining up your arms and through your bloodstream, filling your entire being, as you direct words like the following prayer adapted from the Mexica Winter Solstice rite:

Oh, Divine Child, deign to carry out your great office; deign to do your great work. We are willing to receive the strength and power and sense of divine purpose that you send us, to increase our will to break through personal and planetary limitations in the solar cycle now beginning. We ask to receive only the beneficent vibration of Pluto and Mars who now conjunct You, and that their intensity moves through us and in our midst in ways that are only kind for ourselves and for the planet throughout the New Year.

Like the rays of the Sun, shining on our awareness as well as our ignorance, knowledge shines forth from humanity’s ancient past, guiding us to a more powerful participation in the passage from one cycle to another. This knowledge offers gifts that any of us can use to serve as bridges between earth and sky, between realms evident and those mysterious. We invite you to try one or both of the above ceremonies, to experience the magic of this power portal, recovering the office for which each and every one of us was equipped since we were first conceived in the Womb of Infinite Intelligence, empowering ourselves and the planet for a new era of higher victories.

In the name of Daykeeper founder and our mother, Maya Del Mar—whose star burns bright, shining love and power on and through her offspring and other creations—we wish you a joyous holiday and an empowering path ahead.
