The Moon will reach its full phase with the Sun on February 24, 2024 at 4:31 a.m. on the West Coast of the United States, with the Sun at 05° 23’ Pisces and the Moon at 05° 23’ Virgo. There’s nothing like the sight of the Moon fully illuminated in the pre-dawn sky. This one is called the Snow Moon.
When the Sun is in Pisces and the Moon is in the opposite sign of Virgo, the elements at play are water and earth. Pisces and Virgo are both signs of the mutable or changeable mode.
Virgos like knowing how all the details of something work together, and wanting to fix or at least improve them. Pisces is a sense of vastness and coloring outside the lines, maybe not even noticing the lines to begin with. Both Virgo and Pisces are about being and doing good. Virgo wants to offer skillful service in precise ways. Pisces is more broadly generous. Both of these styles are loving and care-ful. With the Moon in Virgo while the Sun is in Pisces, it’s time to balance Virgoan orderliness with the big-picture dreaminess of Pisces.
At the February 24 Full Moon, before sunrise on the West Coast, the Moon will be “applying” to form a harmonious 90-degree trine aspect with the planet Jupiter, currently making its way through earth sign of Taurus. This trine with Jupiter strengthens the sheer earthiness of the Virgo Moon while adding a dose of inspiration. There’s an emotional satisfaction to be had in being clear-eyed and principled, which is a Virgoan way to be.
The dispositor, or ruling planet, of the Virgo Moon is Mercury, which will be traveling very close to the Sun at this Full Moon time. Mercury in Pisces is a curious placement because Mercury is the capacity to quickly process and convey information while the Piscean style is in no hurry and need not be too specific.
However, Mercury in Pisces also speaks to the possibility of speech (and writing) that is aesthetically beautiful and even far-seeing and of benefit for others. At this Full Moon, there will be four planets in Pisces, making it really a Piscean heyday. The Sun and Mercury will be approaching a conjunction with Saturn in Pisces, while Saturn and Jupiter are in an encouraging sextile aspect with each other. Neptune is in a late degree of Pisces, where it has been for a long time. The Sun/Mercury/Saturn conjunction in Pisces is an invitation to do something—perhaps in realms of writing or art—that’s both visionary and also requires hard, focused work. With the Full Moon in Virgo, one may feel a drive toward perfecting one’s craft.
Personally, I’m excited about this Full Moon and especially about the Sun/Mercury/Saturn conjunction in Pisces beginning on February 23. It just happens that I’m scheduled—a day before the Full Moon while it’s still waxing—to meet with an editor who’s evaluating a work I have in progress. I didn’t (consciously) plan the time of the meeting to coincide with Mercury’s ingress into Pisces opposite my natal Ascendant and Pluto, but I see it now. Astrology works mysteriously by processes of synchronicity, as one often finds out later that there were particular alignments in the sky at unique moments.
There are two other beautiful alignments happening about the time of the February 24 Full Moon. For one, Venus and Mars are together in early degrees of Aquarius. They’ve been energized, in a sense, by having recently made conjunctions with powerhouse Pluto in Aquarius. Venus symbolizes what we love and how we love, and Mars represents how we take action. The style of the sign of Aquarius can be cerebral, analytical, even a bit emotionally distant. Mythologically, one can think of Venus and Mars as “feminine” and “masculine,” though gendered terms may feel a bit loaded these days. Suffice it to say that with Venus and Mars together, it may feel like there’s a unity between the more receptive and more assertive parts of one’s psyche.
Also at this February 24 Full Moon, one of the major transiting aspects of 2024 is growing tighter. That’s the conjunction of Jupiter and Uranus. They meet up, in different signs, about every 13 years. They are nine degrees apart in Taurus right now. Their conjunction will “perfect” on April 20.
Because the planets are all moving at different speeds around the Sun, pairs of planets come together on different schedules. When they do, their symbolic powers fuse. Because astrology works on the metaphysical principle of “as above so below,” we can expect happenings that reflect Jupiterian and Uranian themes of expansiveness and spontaneity.
There’s nothing necessarily “good” or “bad” in astrology, and so there are innumerable possibilities for the coming spring. Look to where the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction will occur in relationship to your own natal chart for clues. And, incline your intentions for everyone to receive the most uplifting kinds of surprises.
Blessings for the Virgo Full Moon and with prayers for peace,
