Affirmative astrology for challenging times

Joe Biden’s 2021 Solar Return

By Alex Miller

Happy Birthday, Joe Biden

Joe Biden’s solar year began at 11:31 AM EST on 19 November 2021, in Washington DC, just hours after a Lunar Eclipse with the longest duration in 580 years, which fell exactly opposed his natal Sun. This is not a positive augur for the coming twelvemonth, and delving deeper into the details, we’re not seeing much to alleviate that.

Thankfully, at least the Moon is not void, and has entered Gemini, but still opposes the Sun, signaling a year of opposition and potential conflict, but also one which could see the fruition of long-term plans, or increased clarity with ongoing issues. Health matters could also become a focus.

The 27 Scorpio Sun conjoins the Solar Return (hereafter abbreviated “SR”) Midheaven at 22 Scorpio, so not surprisingly, it’s another year in the public eye, one which places Biden front and center in career matters as well.  Exactly conjunct the MC is SR Mercury, accompanied by SR asteroid BAM.  Mercury on the MC assures that Biden’s pronouncements cannot escape notice, as the most elevated point in the chart, for good or ill.  BAM suggests an explosive year, particularly as regards Biden’s rhetoric, with the famously gaffe-prone president out on the road more frequently, selling his agenda and promoting the recently passed infrastructure bill and the “Build Back Better” package, still in doubt.  House Dems gave Biden an early birthday present when they passed their version of this on the day of his Solar Return, but the legislation now proceeds to the Senate, where the outcome is anything but assured.

That win in the Lower Chamber, and continued support from that quarter, might be reflected in a trine from SR asteroid House at 21 Libra to a pairing of SR Jupiter and SR asteroid Victoria, named for the Roman goddess of victory, both at 24 Aquarius.  That looks promising, but keep looking – also part of an exact triple conjunction at that degree is Damocles, noted as the doom or pending disaster hanging unseen overhead.  The ongoing extended conjunction of Jupiter and Damocles, active for months (the two have been within five degrees of each other since April 2021), has proven the downfall of several political figures of late, and Biden will be wrestling with this energy the entire year, even after the transiting conjunction separates in early January.

biden SR 21 card1
Joe Biden’s verbal gaffes and malapropisms are legendary, and with SR Mercury exactly on the SR Midheaven, we’re likely to be seeing more of these as the year unfolds

Biden’s issues with potential mortality for the ensuing 18 months were covered in an earlier article, but for now, we can note that the SR is rife with echoes of this possibility.  BAM exact on the MC could also indicate a highly visible assassination attempt, with BAM resonating to all forms of explosiveness, including firearms and bombs.  SR Mars, which rules assassination and guns, is just barely conjoined BAM from 13 Scorpio, and also accentuated by its angular positioning.

Further indicators of a possible violent end include SR asteroids Requiem, named for the funeral mass for the dead, and Gunn, homophone for “gun”, conjoined at 3 and 6 Virgo, in square to the Moon, representing health and the physical body; SR asteroid Nemesis at 29 Sagittarius, noted for downfall and ruin, conjoined SR TNO Ixion at 0 Capricorn, named for the first murderer in Greek myth; and SR asteroid Osiris at 0 Taurus, named for the ancient Egyptian god of the dead, in an exact T-Square with the SR Ascendant/Descendant axis at 0 Aquarius and Leo, with SR asteroid Bida (closest to Biden) at 2 Leo also in square.

General markers of mortality in the year ahead can also be seen in SR asteroid Old Joe at 25 Capricorn, conjoined SR Pluto at 24 Cap, the modern lord of death; and SR asteroid Atropos (named for the the mythic Greek Fate who severs the thread of life at death) at 18 Libra opposed SR asteroid Josephina (feminine variation of “Joseph”) at 15 Aries; this polarity is given extra weight by the fact that Josephina is at station, turning direct at that degree on December 2nd.  As well, SR asteroid Valentine (representing the heart) conjoins SR asteroid Lachesis (named for Atropos’ sister, the Fate who determines the span of life) at 14 and 15 Sagittarius, squared by SR asteroids Anubis (named for the Egyptian deity governing funerary rites) at 13 Virgo and d’Arrest (cessation) at 19 Virgo, with this pattern in semisquare and sesquiquadrate to asteroid Bida, which could suggest a fatal (Lachesis, Anubis) cardiac (Valentine) arrest (d’Arrest), commonly known as a heart attack.

biden SR 21 harris
Hand in hand, or joined at the hip? Biden and VP Kamala Harris may become inseparable this year, as denoted by SR asteroid Harris conjunct the SR Sun

That this will be a transitional year for Biden is affirmed by two additional PNAs (Personal-Named Asteroids) at station in the 2021 Solar Return.  Asteroid Bida at 2 Leo turns retrograde 5 days after the solar year begins, while SR asteroid Josefa (one of several asteroids to represent Joseph) turned direct two weeks prior at 4 Aries, and remains at that degree in the SR, indicating a literal “turning point” for Biden.

A conjunction of SR Venus at 12 Capricorn with SR asteroids NOT and Whitehouse at 14 and 15 Cap could suggest that Biden’s approval ratings continue to flag, with the administration (Whitehouse) remaining unpopular (NOT/Venus).

Political friends and foes populate the chart as well.  SR asteroid Harris at 25 Scorpio is right beside the Sun, in much the way that VP Kamala Harris is just that heartbeat away from assuming Biden’s mantle.  The conjunction, in the SR Tenth House, suggests a close working relationship, but also the possibility of friction between them, with too much togetherness.

A remarkable grouping of SR asteroids Schumi, McConnell and Nancy at 13, 16 and 18 Aquarius, all conjoined SR Saturn at 8 Aquarius, depicts the enmeshment (conjunction) of the powers-that-be in government (Saturn), with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (Schumi), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (McConnell) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Nancy) tripping over each other in the struggle to accomplish, or defeat, the administration’s agenda.  Continued hostilities and infighting between them shows in the square to SR Mars at 13 Scorpio.

biden SR 21 leaders
Three’s a crowd: PNAs for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell all lie within five degrees of each other in Biden’s Solar Return chart, also conjoined Saturn and squared Mars, virtually assuring more stress, struggle and infighting in government this year

As usual, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is odd-man-out in this power play.  SR Asteroid McCarthy at 15 Taurus conjoins SR Uranus at 12 Taurus and exactly opposes SR asteroid Jose at 15 Scorpio, with SR Mars at 13 Scorpio.  McCarthy’s antagonism (opposition) and downright hostility (Mars) to the Biden agenda (Jose), and his desire to generally upset things and provoke controversy (Uranus), is well depicted by this polarity, as is the ongoing struggle with Pelosi, as seen in McCarthy squared Nancy.  McCarthy’s position will be energized, for good or ill, by two eclipses in the coming year:  a Solar Eclipse at 10 Taurus on 30 April 2022, and a Lunar eclipse at 16 Taurus on 8 November 2022, both conjunct SR asteroid McCarthy.  In particular, the autumnal Lunar Eclipse, coming the very day of the Midterm Elections, could signal a hand-off of the gavel from Nancy Pelosi to Kevin McCarthy, should the GOP regain control of the House.

SR Asteroid House at 21 Libra conjoined SR Asteroid Washingtonia at 20 Libra, at the fulcrum of a tense T-Square with SR Pluto at 24 Capricorn and SR asteroid America at 20 Cancer, suggests that the real seat of power (Pluto) in the capital (Washingtonia) rests with the House of Representatives (House), but that the government (House, Washingtonia) is at odds with (square) the country at large (America).  SR TNO Eris at 23 Aries makes this a Grand Cross, and adds the elements of discontent, strife and discord, with a restless populace feeling slighted and spoiling for a fight.

biden SR 21 mccarthy
The man who would be Speaker – House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is represented by SR asteroid McCarthy, conjunct SR Uranus and opposed SR Mars with SR asteroid Jose, depicting his antipathy and hostility to the president, and a willingness to shake things up, regardless of the controversy involved

The administration’s potential source of downfall, self-created, is seen in SR asteroid Senator at 28 Pisces, in a T-Square with SR TNO Chaos at 29 Gemini and SR asteroid Nemesis at 29 Sagittarius.  This indicates the Senate, and specifically Democratic hold-out Joe Manchin (D-WV) (Senator) as the likely source of roadblocks (Nemesis), disunity, disorder and confusion (Chaos) as the administration tries to pass its legislation with the slimmest of majorities, where every senator holds a veto, perhaps resulting in the ruin and collapse (Nemesis) of Biden’s agenda.  Asteroid Senator widely cojoins SR Neptune at 20 Pisces, signaling the Senate as the source of disappointment and unrealistic expectations.

All in all, not the best of years for Joe Biden, with possibly devastating, potentially fatal, consequences.
