Mayan Metaphysics

by Crystal Pomeroy

Marking the beginning of the hot season in the land of the Maya, May corresponds with the fire element, considered the earthly representative of the Sun, Ahau.

Rather than a nuisance to be avoided, May’s heat comes with rain, accelerating life in the natural world and evoking the divine principle of growth. Applied to inner work, it relates to the alchemy of steam baths, a popular Mayan purification practice. During the last May before the planetary transition of 2012-2013, our spiritual practice takes on special significance, further intensified by the role of the Pleiade—a player in Mayan cosmology—at the Solar Eclipse of May 20.

Soul ALchemy

The following ceremony is designed to ignite the fires of your soul and burn away inner blocks to manifesting divine desire, as you contribute to planetary healing.

Timely touches for your sacred space

  • Incense, preferably copal or myrrh, or, if unavailable, cinnamon or cloves
  • Fire, in a fireplace or another appropriate burning space or vessel, or a large yellow candle
  • A small, flat-bottomed candle for each participant, preferably yellow and if unavailable, white
  • A small, attractive container with honey
  • Yellow flowers, preferably wild or sunflowers
  • A piece of amber, gold, or topaz

Soul Fire Ceremony

Light the incense, saying,

This is an offering for the Chaste Mother, and the solar angels who appear on earth in sunlight, in any natural light, and in Ahau, fire. As you touch me (us) through the heat of May, (pause to feel the May air), please ignite the flame of divine desire in my (our) being(s), the longing for joyful union with Love, the will to live in congruence with my (our) highest values.

Light the fire, saying,

I light this flame as I freely light the fire of divine desire in my being.

(If done in a group, each person can take a small candle, and approaching the fire or larger candle, can repeat those words, as the other participants say,

We see the light of divine desire burning in you.)

Imagine the flame growing bright in your heart, as you repeat words and visualizations like those that follow during at least five minutes,

Divine desire is alive in my heart, and I nurture it by remembering my spiritual longings.

(Pause to do this; if done in group, take turns mentioning some spiritual desires that come to mind.)

Its brightness grows, surrounding my entire being, consuming any untrue attraction or attachment, and guiding my will and actions in true motivation now.

Repeat words like those that follow for another three minutes:

The divine desire burning in my heart and soul connects me with the spirit-light in hearts and souls everywhere, and we surround the entire planet with an aura of love-light that joins with that of helping angels, to purify, protect and heal the earth now.

After doing the initial ceremony, follow up each day throughout the rest of the month by doing all the steps, or, if you prefer, just the last two affirmations suggested above.

May’s nature seems like a steam bath in Maya Haab (land of the Mayas). Whether or not you are in a warm area this month, heat can be taken as a metaphor for the pressure of accelerated change that is part of the present cosmic environment. Persistently behold the heat life seems to put on you as a reference point for the flame burning in your soul, and become part of the divine alchemy of these times.
