Mayan Metaphysics

by Crystal Pomeroy

The more I study the native traditions of Mexico where I live, the more I appreciate their power. I remember the old textbook versions of pagan beliefs, which evoked infantile civilizations whose inhabitants thought they had to adore the Sun to convince it to rise each morning, or pray to the god of grain in hopes that crops would grow. In fact, the ancient Maya, and other Mesoamerican nations, saw all of life as interrelated, and coordinated their inner work to the cycles of earth and sy with a deeply psychological and metaphysical understanding.

February has a special place in the yearly wheel as the halfway mark between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. The Sun has symbolically won a new place for itself as it circles around the sky; and from this month’s vantage it touches the spirit of seeds, calling forth the life that lies dormant within them even before they are planted.

The following exercise is synchronized with that magic, in seasonal preparation for the cosmic transition of 2012-13. It connects your intentions with the spark of all life as it seals physical and spiritual seeds of good around the world from any weakening influence, whether energetic, genetic, chemical or meteorological.

Materials

  • Pen and notebook or page (one set for each participant)
  • Incense, preferably copal, sage or another earthy, natural scent
  • A natural beeswax candle
  • A small amount of seasonal seeds: Sunflowers, zinnia and marigolds are flowers that can be started indoors in the cooler climates, for later transplanting
  • A flower pot or pots (large plastic bottles can be cut in half to recycle for this purpose), unless  you happen to have garden space and live in a climate that favors planting outdoors in February.

Ritual

∞ Light your incense as you say,

This is an offering to the essences and archangels of the 4 cosmic directions, whose assistance I request to bless the seeds of my intent.

∞ Light your candle as you say,

This flame evokes the fire of the Divine Child who now aligns with fire of Spring.

∞ Clarify in writing what you consider to be your most important goal or goals. Keep it to 3 or less, so that the energy is focused. Include at least one that is related to your spiritual growth.

∞ At dawn or early morning, face east, either outside or by a window, hold several seeds in your right palm (left if that is your dominant hand), closing your fingers and the other hand about them, as you speak to the Sun (if it happens to be cloudy, that’s OK, your message will still get through). Words like those that follow are adapted from Mayan wisdom, which relates this time of year to the solar or light child within, and the yearly process of the divine Sun which has grown in strength at this time:

Oh, Divine, Beloved Child of Light who lives within me and all creation, and who was born at Winter Solstice, you are now becoming visible in the world and in my awareness. Beloved Sun, bless you for the strength and nourishment you have shared and the fire of life with which you touch seeds throughout the Northern hemisphere. My heartfelt intentions are also seeds, and I infuse them with the life kernel now awakening in the seeds I hold, as I commit to caring for and cultivating both kinds of seeds each day.

The Life Force that will make them sprout and grow comes forth in all seeds and divine intentions around the world, shielding them from any influence unlike the Omnipresent Good that surges forth in them now.

∞ If you have more than one goal, repeat the last step for each one, holding a different fistful of seeds for each.

∞ Plant or sprout your seeds according to the instructions on the package or the principles of gardening.

The best time to unleash the magic of February with this ceremony is at the beginning of the month. In accordance with the Mayan wisdom of inner discipline and preparation for cosmic portals, one should follow up by caring for the seeds, speaking to them and blessing them each day, with words like those above, which you may adapt and enrich with your own inspiration and love. The daily connection with your plants is a point of reference for the time and attention that shall also be devoted each day to the goal or goals which you had in mind at the time of the ceremony.

Dear Daykeeper Premium Subscriber, as you apply the suggestions shared above, you will be surprised to discover inner and outer synchronicities that confirm the response of the cosmic essences to this conscious connection. We would love to hear your feedback about the experience, as we commune the Mayan’s millennial wisdom which now comes to light, empowering intentions across the ages and dimensions.

Note: The affirmations for Divine Order suggested in our previous article on the Mayan Calendar are still current for February.
