Note: A VOC Moon period is when the Moon is making no further major planetary aspects before it changes signs. Moon and its aspects are strongly associated with our everyday behavior, and without those aspects to direct our course, we are left much more free to pursue our own ends in our own way. It is like you’re driving down the freeway and find the road signs removed for awhile. On the one hand, plans may go awry, you may miss your exit; on the other hand, inner work is greatly favored as those external "instructions" are reduced.

Times used are EST, because the overall influences for the United States are centered in Washington DC.

FRIDAY JUNE 1. It’s a time to make overtures to Important others, and to take the initiative in making contacts in general. If you must sign a contract before the end of the month, today is the day. People want to be sociable, and nice, and it’s a good day for all kinds of personal connections. If you have a dispute to settle, do it now. Activities related to beauty and the arts are also favored. Night is active and passionate.

SATURDAY JUNE 2 and SUNDAY JUNE 3. Moon is in intense Scorpio for the entire weekend. Plan something about which you feel deeply and passionately. It could even be hard work. Physical energy will want an outlet, and hiking, doing some sport, or remodeling your home or garden could be satisfying. There is brooding energy now, and you may want to be alone to commune with spirit. It’s a good weekend for connecting with water, with photography, or with the arts. Mercury is about to turn retrograde, and there is disequilibrium connected with communication, travel and tools. It’s not a time, for instance, for installing a new computer program. Or for picking a fight.

MONDAY JUNE 4. This day may feel confusing. Mercury turns retrograde at 1:22 a.m. to instigate shifts in thinking, and likely indecision. Moon is VOC in Scorpio for most of the day–from 7:29 a.m. until it enters Sagittarius at 4:58 p.m. During this time, at 7:50 a.m., Sun opposes Pluto to invigorate the power of transformation.

Without the Moon to coordinate synchronicities for most of the day, the Sun will take over and Sun-Pluto will be a very strong aspect. Conscious will is given free play. This potent aspect occurs at 14 Sagittarius-Gemini, and all planets within 2 or 3 degrees are ripe for catharsis and transformation, especially those in the four mutable signs–Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.

Powerful Pluto moves slowly. It takes 250 years to round the ecliptic. Today it is in its exact first quarter phase from its position at 14 Virgo in November 1963, when JFK was murdered. First quarters are breakthrough times, sometimes called "a crisis in action." Events now add another layer of mystery to JFK’s death.

The U.S. is strongly affected now. Watch for powerful action. 14 Sagittarius is on the U.S. Ascendant, infusing the nation with power. Sun is on the descendant, invigorating relationships. And Jupiter is transiting over U.S. Mars, telling the fighter that the sky’s the limit.

The masculine gods have full sway today, as Moon stays in the background. We can begin some powerful work with a circumstance from the past. It’s a superlative day for any kind of investigation or research.

TUESDAY JUNE 5. Full Moon at 16 Sagittarius occurs at 9:39 p.m. EDT. We’ve been immersed in the Gemini-Sagittarius polarity all year–and will continue to be for the remainder of the year–and now we see it displayed in force under the light of the Full Moon. Seven of the ten major planets are in that polarity, along with two of the four asteroids, plus Chiron.

This is a mental axis– versatile, communicative, expansive, restless, and ready for the next adventure. Gemini makes connections–all kinds–and is always looking for new ones. Sagittarius processes those connections to make a meaningful pattern. Its motto is "Don’t fence me in." Being free to travel over the next horizon is an imperative. Adventurism perhaps best describes the Gemini-Sagittarius polarity. Gemini is amoral, but Sagittarius likes an abstract code of ethics, such as religious precepts. Newt Gingrich is an example of exactly the Sun-Moon combination which we have today.

Pluto here conjoins Moon and opposes Sun. This Moon is all about the use of power to expand and to realign.

Mercury just turned retrograde, so we are dealing with old ideas. It is exactly aspecting the retrograde Mercury which occurred on Election Day, and action to remedy voting problems may kick in now.

The U.S. natal chart has Mercury retrograde, and the nation historically makes important changes while Mercury in the sky is traveling retrograde. (This is also true for individuals born with Mercury retrograde.) This means that old things are gone over and over and over.

With Jupiter conjoining U.S. Mars, the military will be the centerpiece of the retrograde overhaul.

This chart fully supports the Star Wars venture.

For each of us, it supports transforming our beliefs, philosophies, and group loyalties. All four mutable signs–Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces–are particularly stimulated.

The Sabian Symbol for 16 Sagittarius is

"SEAGULLS FLY AROUND A SHIP IN EXPECTATION OF FOOD. The easily acquired dependence of psychic desires upon the stimulation of social circumstances. The seagulls symbolize the more wild and untamable energies of the human soul, but they can develop a kind of domesticated dependence upon the by products of humans’ adventures within the realm of the unconscious (the sea). Natural instincts feed on the reactions, and often perversions, of the socially conditioned mind. It shows how nature can readily become subservient to man’s restless ambition to dominate the entire biosphere through an all-human planetary socioeconomic organization. This is a symbol of DEPENDENCE. "

Astrologer Dane Rudhyar, who wrote this paragraph, saw history through a long lens. This is the exact circumstance now, and it appears that we are reaching the end of the road of corporate domination and exploitation . This image represents the basic Sagittarius-Gemini polarity of nature’s wild soul vs. the taming influences of "civilization." Sagittarius-Gemini is the primary self-other axis of the United States chart, and it so aptly describes the character of the development of this nation, and the current conflicts in our hearts and minds.

Astro*Carto*Graphy maps show that the Sun-Moon relationship polarity of this Full Moon, which straddles that same polarity in the U.S. chart, crosses right through central U.S., the nation’s heartland.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 6. Yesterday’s very busy demeanor continues until midnight and beyond. Neither last night nor tonight are good for sleeping, as Sag-Gemini keeps us a-twitter with potentialities and alert to possibilities. Our mental wheels are spinning. Optimism and activism are encouraged. Venus moves from Aries to Taurus today, to shift our values from self-assertion to stewarding our territory and possessions.

THURSDAY JUNE 7. Moon is VOC in Capricorn for the entire day. This is likely to be a slow day. Take time to be still and assimilate the events of the last two hectic days. With the retrogrades and the VOC, we are inward-oriented. We can tune into ourselves and find the source of our personal grounding in the midst of outer busy-ness.

FRIDAY JUNE 8. Partnership is a potential with any polarity, and particularly with Sag-Gemini because they both want to communicate. Today is the peak of this month’s creative partnership energy, as Pallas, the strategist, opposes Juno, the partner. Moon remains VOC in Capricorn, giving the partnership a serious and distinctive flavor. The purpose could be a reconstruction project.

SATURDAY JUNE 9. We may feel at odds with ourselves this morning. Moon is still VOC in Capricorn, and purposeful Capricorn may feel frustrated– perhaps for the last two days– with not accomplishing what she has in mind. Cheer up. At 12:20 p.m. Moon enters Aquarius, and our "should" burden lightens. We’re released to do our thing, whatever it might be. Tonight can be good for lively discussion over a good dinner. Ask for a helpful dream before you go to bed.

SUNDAY JUNE 10. Notice last night’s dreaming. It may bring you messages. Deep, intense, and purposeful thinking is the day’s mode. You may have a need to be alone with your new thoughts, but on the other hand you may want to share with a friendly, inspirational group. The future calls, and intuition is strong.

MONDAY JUNE 11. Moon continues in stimulating Aquarius, with excellent aspects. We can find ready ears to listen to our ideas. The entire day is absolutely tops for communication, especially of new and unusual ideas. Invention is also in the air, and we can flavor old ideas with our own vision of reform. This is a long, lively and fun day, with lots of information floating in our minds and in the heavens. We can tap into it successfully.

TUESDAY JUNE 12. Moon is travelling through Pisces for the next two and one-half days. Pisces is a mutable sign, like Gemini and Sagittarius. So is Pisces’ opposite sign, Virgo. Whenever Moon is travelling through Pisces or Virgo, it challenges the great gathering in Gemini or Sagittarius, and there is action and reaction. With moon in dreamy Pisces, those challenges can be confusing. Take time to center and listen to your higher self.

Mars, the Warrior, opposes Jupiter, King of the Gods today, to loose a lot of aggressive energy. Let inner guidance help us use it well.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 13. Last Quarter Moon occurs at 24 Pisces. This is an expansive, Jupiterian Moon, with those wild men, Mars and Chiron, for seasoning. The energy level is super high, but direction can easily get out of hand. All of these mutable signs can be vacillating and indecisive. Neptune’s lack of clarity hangs over all, and anxiety and nervousness can impel us into unwise action. Juno, too, is prominent. Watch for abuse or being abused. If you feel uncomfortable or that a situation is wrong, stop and pull out of it. Virgo especially is under strain.

This is last quarter, release time. Be especially conscious of yourself, and let go of communication styles, attitudes, and beliefs that are not working for you. We begin now a 10-day period of tremendous emphasis on communication and movement.

THURSDAY JUNE 14. Moon is VOC in Pisces this morning, and we have time to assimilate yesterday’s happenings. Take time to meditate, contemplate, and be alone. We are making a new start in how we expand ourselves into the world, and yesterday’s demonstrations can help us center on our own integrity as we approach the solar eclipse, and prepare for the changes which it will set in motion. At 1:03 p.m. Moon enters Aries, and with it more clarity about our goals.

Tonight can be very sensual and romantic. At the same time we can be drawn into, or confused by, illusion. Simply let love be unconditional. Expectations about the other can lead to disappointment.

FRIDAY JUNE 15 and SATURDAY JUNE 16. Gung ho moon in Aries leads us directly and quickly along our pathway, clear about our direction and ready to meet all challengers. We feel bold and energetic, and as though we can accomplish whatever we want. This is a positive day, and a perfect time to clarify our visions for the future and infuse them with the energy of fulfillment. You might make a treasure map, with words, drawings, symbols, or pictures to make your visions more concrete.

The energy of these two days calls us to enter very deeply into consciousness. Simply to be present, to be here now–which is difficult–can be the best way to be conscious. We can now take a big step in that leap of consciousness, which is so vital for us all at this crucial time in the world. New visions are called for, and this is prime time to create them.

Every day until New Moon we can work on and develop these visions.

SUNDAY JUNE 17 and MONDAY JUNE 18. Moon is travelling through Taurus, and these are days for adding substance to our visions. Let’s be practical. What exactly can we do or encourage others to do to bring our dreams into reality? On Sunday, spend time in nature, near water, or alone. Organize your priorities in your mind–and then have a delicious, festive dinner on Sunday evening. On Monday let your mind range widely and be open to new and perhaps strange ideas. Open yourself to change. There are new things afoot in the heavens.

TUESDAY JUNE 19. Moon is in Gemini and now, besides our imaginations, we have our minds and our feet working. Today we can expand our thinking and see future possibilities. At the same time we can see how to build that new reality. This is an extraordinarily creative day, especially in making plans for the future.

A major overhaul of social structures begins now, at the dark of the moon–release time–and continues through the remainder of 2001.

A long walk might help us shed the past and see the future.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 20. Moon continues in lively, restless Gemini, and we will find ourselves busy until midnight. At the same time, we are vulnerable for the next two days. Relax as much as you can today, and tomorrow definitely take it easy. Cancer and Gemini energy is most affected now.

THURSDAY JUNE 21. Sun enters Cancer at 3:38 a.m. EDT to mark Summer Solstice. Moon enters Cancer at 7:41 a.m. to join Sun. In the meantime, a Total Solar Eclipse has begun–at 5:32 a.m. The Eclipse thus begins with Moon in Gemini. Eclipse totality is at 7:58 a.m., and by then Sun and Moon are both in Cancer. Solstice has begun as well.

This is a complicated Eclipse, occurring at powerful Solstice time, and is total. It is quite amazing.

This Solstice Eclipse also includes the two major polarities in the U.S. chart, Cancer and Gemini. Eclipses tend to repeat, but in my records of hundreds of years, there is no such Eclipse as this one. The Solstice Eclipse of June 21, 2020 is close, but it doesn’t include the Gemini effect. Next closest is the June 22 Eclipse of 1732, but it is more than 1 degree past Solstice.

All Cancer-Capricorn Eclipse cycles radically change the U.S. power structure. In 1732 George Washington was born, and Georgia was the thirteenth colony to be admitted to the "nation," completing the nucleus of the to-be nation. Now we have another "George"–George Bush moving us in new directions.

The Solstice Chart, at 0 Cancer, carries us through summer season. The Eclipse chart, at just past 0 Cancer, provides sensitive points for many years. It will, in fact, be restimulated at every seasonal beginning. There is about four hours between the two charts.

SUMMER SOLSTICE

Solstice occurs at 3:38 am. EDT. The wheel of this chart is almost identical to that of the Inauguration chart, and some of the planets are at the same degree as well, most notably strategist Pallas Athena in the prominent seventh house of the public, at the very end of Scorpio. This likeness to the Inauguration chart reinforces the power and character of the Bush Administration at this time.

Asteroid expert Demetra George says about Pallas in Scorpio: "Politically, this is a fearless and ruthless warrior, controlling the power of the masses, and skilled in strategy and espionage." This Pallas placement conjoins Dick Cheney’s Pallas.

(Pallas Athena, now retrograde, will return to this Scorpio position about Nov. 22. She will be energized then by Sun.)

I often call Pallas Athena "General Pallas" because in charts I’ve noticed these commanding qualities she brings, even in other signs. Pallas Athena in Scorpio is the secret of the resounding power of the Bush Administration. Interesting that in mythology Athena (who later took the name Pallas) sprang fully grown from the forehead of her father, Zeus.

BUT our current Scorpio Pallas is not the only Pallas placement important to the United States. In the U.S. natal chart Pallas Athena is in late Aquarius, next to the U.S. Moon, the people. Aquarius is the sign of freedom, independence, and looking toward the future. Pallas here describes the popularity of New Age developments and the political revolutionary, organizing grass roots protests. The U.S. is known for freedom, and the emotional impulse of its people is towards freedom. The Statue of Liberty represents the U.S. Pallas Athena.

These two Pallas placements, in Scorpio and Aquarius, make a strong fixed sign square, which means an enduring, powerful challenge between the two. I believe that the Universe set up this intense challenge to push the U.S. people out of their apathy, for us to see what’s going on re the abuse of power, and to arouse us anew to revive our ideals and to fight for freedom and dignity for everyone.

This is a process, a four-year process. This Solstice chart shows that the Administration will intensify its pushiness during the summer. And thereby build up reactional pressure.

Pluto now is still conjoined the U.S. Ascendant. The nation continues in its deep transformational process. This Solstice Moon is an old, old moon, and the process of letting go, or releasing, is at maximum. This is a common moon phase for revolutionaries. The old pattern has outlived its usefulness.

The Sabian Symbol for the moon at 28 Gemini is

"THROUGH BANKRUPTCY, SOCIETY GIVES TO AN OVERBURDENED INDIVIDUAL THE OPPORTUNITY TO BEGIN AGAIN. A release from unbearable pressures, freeing one for new tasks…A society which enthrones the principle of ruthless competition must also develop mechanisms to exteriorize the principle of compassion. LIBERATION FROM THE PAST."

This is another amazingly right-on Sabian Symbol. It’s also ironical that one of the first things Congress did under Bush was to, without debate or discussion, pass a tough bankruptcy bill. "Compassionate conservatism."

(I put a lot of attention on the United States. One reason is because the energies now are pushing the nation through a period of great change. But a more important reason is because the powerful United States is a major influence upon the fate of the human race. Those of us who live here have a crucial responsibility to participate in the politics of the nation. And knowledge is power.)

SUMMER SOLSTICE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

The Eclipse is exact at 1 Cancer at 7:58 a.m. EDT on June 21. Cancer eclipses change security arrangements. This one will eclipse the present and return us to the past (as did last summer’s Cancer Eclipse), perhaps back to 1732. Solar Eclipse effects last a very long time, probably until there is another Solar Eclipse at that same point–and even then the effects seem to be cumulative. This one will last at least until 2020.

Besides the Eclipse itself representing a re-emergence of the past, the fact that half of the major planets are now retrograde also brings up the past. The Eclipse opens a special opportunity to change conditions of the past. Eclipses close old doors and open new ones. This is particularly true of Lunar Eclipses, and we have one in Capricorn in two weeks.

Changes center on security and family, in the light of structural conditions. Rebuilding lines of communication are important.

Cancer is a cardinal sign. Cardinal signs are the doers, the starters. They usher in each of the four seasons. In the Northern Hemisphere Aries brings in the freshness of spring, Cancer brings in the security of family as we gather for summer vacations, Libra brings in the importance of cooperative relationships as we return to work and school in the autumn, and Capricorn brings in the severity of winter.

This extraordinarily potent Eclipse will make each one of those four days of the year resonate with intense energy during the years around the eclipse–and into the future as well. This Eclipse correlates with cardinal sign ACTION.

The most immediate and intense manifestation will occur around the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in two weeks, on July 5, setting in motion the new year’s solar cycle of the United States. The two-week period from now until then is particularly unstable and unpredictable.

The Capricorn emotional energy now rises up in full force. This is the energy of daddy, of authority, of hierarchy, of government, of structure, of law, and of business. It is conservative. It refers to tradition, and tries to preserve.

Capricorn is well supported now by a Venus-Taurus conjunction in earth sign Taurus. This represents a dedication to hanging onto what is ours, and protecting our territory. Vesta in Taurus is often involved where there are actual territorial disputes. The U.S. has Vesta in Taurus. Vesta now returns to its natal position to begin a new four-year cycle for the U.S. in regard to money, investments, territory, and all tangible goods.

The concentration of the Bush Administration on Capricornian control of the material aspect of life will intensify, in the form of enlarging and perpetuating the U.S. imperialistic past. So will rebellion against it simmer amongst the people.

However, there are other ways to concentrate on material goods, the best of which also come from the past. That is to revere and respect the Earth, from which all comes, and to again come to understand the chain of life which brings Earth’s bounties to us. The underground rebellion may take this form.

This Eclipse opens a door for a return to learning to live in harmony with Earth. Education, an issue now, can be used to enhance consciousness of the web of life.

An important aspect now (Jupiter opposite Chiron) represents a turning point in security issues brought up 11 years ago. These include an ozone conference in London, an AIDS conference in San Francisco, resumption of oil drilling off Alaska, Pres. Bush calling for raising taxes (not cutting), and Pres. Bush offering "free trade" to Latin America.

The major event in U.S. news during that period, June 1990, was Nelson Mandela’s triumphant trip across the United States, including his attendance at the AIDS conference. Just before he came, South Africa ended apartheid in public places.

This is particularly relevant in view of the pathway of this Eclipse. It begins just east of Argentina, crosses the Atlantic, crosses Africa just north of South Africa, and ends at sunset in the Indian Ocean. The eclipse shadow is much larger than the narrow path of totality. The shadow covers the lower 2/3 of Africa. In Cape Town, for instance, the Eclipse will be 60%.

We can be sure that sub-Sahara Africa is in for some big changes. And that the terrible AIDS epidemic will be a major subject.

The chart for the Eclipse is unusual, important, and with many significant ramifications. Most affected are planets at 1 degree of the four cardinal signs. Secondarily affected are all planets in the signs of Cancer and Capricorn. And thirdly, all planets in the signs of Sagittarius and Gemini.

Location maps for both Solstice and Eclipse times emphasize the West Coast of the United States. There are two big potentials here for major change: a nervous earth and a nervous electorate.

Iran is also a hot spot on both maps.

And Neptune, the energy of dreams, illusions, glamour and inspiration continues to dominate Washington DC on both maps. Neptune is associated with oil and with fossil fuels. Dick Cheney’s Aquarius Sun conjoins and energizes this Neptune, which has been the dominating energy of this Administration.

Don’t forget to create your own little eclipse tonight by turning out your lights from 7-10 p.m. local time in protestation of the Bush energy policies, and in support of energy conservation and renewal, including our own. Light a candle in honor of the Sun.

FRIDAY JUNE 22. We start the day with pleasant social relations, particularly with family. At 10:11 a.m. Moon goes VOC for almost 24 hours. Cancer is a receptive, sensitive sign. Use this time to be quiet and alone, and simply assimilate the potent Eclipse energies. You may feel vulnerable to the impingements of the world.

SATURDAY JUNE 23. Moon enters Leo at 8:55 a.m., and we feel our energy rise. We’re willing to work hard on a project, perhaps one of construction or deconstruction. This can be a day of hard work and big accomplishment. We do want appreciation for our efforts.

SUNDAY JUNE 24. This is a rich day, filled with drama. And the excitement goes on until late at night. Our creative abilities shine, and we want to tell our stories, or perhaps act them out. All the world’s a stage, and we direct the action. This can be a fun and lusty day.

MONDAY JUNE 25. At 9:57 a.m. Moon enters hard-working Virgo to support Cancer Sun in his security needs. They work well and efficiently together, and we do feel like tending to business. In fact, by night we could become workaholic. Perhaps we have a deadline to meet. Obligations do pull on us, and we may become irritable.

Juno opposes Pluto today, and we may find either ourselves or our nation involved in an abusive situation. Power struggles with others are possible. Be conscious, and work to stay centered.

TUESDAY JUNE 26. Hard work continues, from early until late. This week’s energy has been perfect for a big construction project. Changes in lines of communication are also in the forefront. We center on our top values and priorities as we realign parts of our lives.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 27. Tonight at 11:20 p.m. we reach First Quarter Moon in Libra. This an optimistic day, as we push towards a breakthrough. Cancer-Capricorn has the spotlight, which means issues of security, family, business, and government have our attention. Moon is in Libra, and everything now hovers around cooperative partnership. Today and tomorrow Eclipse changes are set into motion. The dominant polarity of the year is strong: Gemini-Sagittarius, where lower and higher minds meet, and information can become understanding.

The Sabian Symbol for the Moon at 7 Libra is

"A WOMAN FEEDING CHICKENS AND PROTECTING THEM FROM THE HAWKS. The most basic law of our universe is that every release of new potentialities (or modes of energy) brings about a polarization of effects–that is, the new potentiality will be used both for construction and destruction. It will arouse individuals (or groups or nations) to take a series of steps which will lead some to greater success, others to deeper failure. Whoever makes possible this new release has to accept the karma of both the success and the failure. We see here the forever-present struggle involved in making it possible for the future-oriented actualizers of an ideal to survive the attacks of tradition-worshipping minds that can only follow the lines of automatic response. GUARDIANSHIP."

THURSDAY JUNE 28. Just after midnight, Mercury turns direct at 22 Gemini, exactly where Jupiter was sitting when Mercury turned retrograde on June 4.

This is exactly on the U.S. Mars. I hate to say it, but this is war, folks–or rather, in Gemini, war technology. Mars. Jupiter and Mercury together represent enormous mental activity geared towards battle, and they have hung out together during this entire month. In addition, Saturn is on the U.S. Uranus, also in Gemini, during this period. Historically, activation of that Uranus is associated with war and conflict.

This is first quarter moon, a time of action. We make breakthroughs which move us towards our Cancerian security goals. Moon is in Libra, a sign of war and peace. It is now at 8 degrees, the degree of China’s Libra Sun.

GW’s great Libra gathering in his chart is stimulated all day long, as Moon travels through the heavens, and by tonight he begins his monthly personal emotional cycle. It is a turning point for him, and is apt to set his emotional outlook for the next year.

Aspects are excellent for much constructive activity for the next 36 hours. Libra Moon impels us to connect with people, and those connections will be harmonious and successful. Now, with Mercury direct, all communication receives a green light.

FRIDAY JUNE 29. Quick, brilliant, productive communication continues until 11:07 a.m., when Moon goes VOC. At 4:28 p.m. Moon enters intense Scorpio. A dark, exciting movie or video would appeal tonight. Look for mystery in the shadows. Nothing is what it seems.

SATURDAY JUNE 30. Last night’s dreams will be revealing. Try to remember a bit. Freedom and rebellion are in the air today. You may want to gather with others who share your ideals. Being active in nature would be satisfying.
