Daykeeper's December 2010 General Monthly Influences

by Boots Hart

If we were to pick a theme for December, it would probably be "over the river and through the woods" as an image of how life gets easier or more challenging based on our willingness to get out there and do, be and grapple with our endurance—not to mention the correctness of our direction and how well we've prioritized!

All this begins with Mercury entering Capricorn at 0:12 (UT) on December 1. That this happens with the North Node at 3 Capricorn conjunct Sappho and Pluto at 4 Capricorn suggests shifting social dynamics…probably resulting in changes of schedules (Pluto/4 Cap) which become necessary as a part of more “universal (Sappho/North Node) needs.” Because the lunar nodes move backward through the zodiac, we know these needs (whatever they may be) are moving towards us and thus will take priority. Ignore such things at your own peril!

Which is not to say this is all bad. You may have been waiting for one thing to end so that you could get on with something else…and with Venus at 0 Scorpio that waiting may now end.

Or you may just realize that you need to get on with your life in spite of "other factors."

Does this mean you're becoming more pliable? More realistic? Maybe. Then again, it could be someone else who is finally giving up on being stubborn. It could also be some "meeting of the minds," which would be apt now as Mercury in Capricorn is about taking care of business.

About the only suggested warning now is for those who have been capering their la-dee-dah way through life's park thinking all will be as they want it to be. For you, something new may arise which throws a wrench in your works, the karmic point of which would be to demonstrate that no, you don't get to just do what you like or want to do! You are part of this world and the world forces participation on those who are reluctant!

Finances, and our perspective on same are stressed by December 5's New Moon at 13 Sagittarius (at 5:37pm UT). With Icarus at 11 Sagittarius and Ixion at 16 Sagittarius (opposition fixed star Rigel at 16 Gemini) there's a need to be courageous (Icarus/11 Sagittarius)…and yet, we cannot act as though we are "entitled" to things. We may think that (with Ixion around, that's likely!) and we may have to deal with people who think that (ditto!). But that doesn't make it true. And where Ixion goes, so more often than not, follows a fall. So be careful—especially about choices which negate the rights/validity of others.

If you stop, somewhere in your heart of hearts (or some other portion of your anatomy) you know you've tried this before—and that it didn't work then, either (Rigel)! With 13 Sagittarius (the degree of this New Moon) suggesting change, and "non-conformity" as a key to success, there is a temptation to rebel or protest…and yes, you may be lobbying for change. And with Uranus, symbol of change, conjunct Lust (fixation) and Byblis (the old truth) there's a lot we each think needs changing! But this is a New Moon…a new moment about the Self—not others. So any real change begins with us. It may be how we approach things, it may be getting more realistic, it may be recognizing that our means, our methods, our priorities just aren't working. The theory here is that if you "fix" your side of the equation, things will begin to shift. But you have to start with you.

Yet let's be real: this New Moon is happening as all is in a fluffle, reflecting how the holidays are just settling in about a week before Mercury goes retrograde. That's a notoriously hassled time anyway, never mind that Uranus is also on station!

That Uranus goes direct at 26 Pisces on December 6 (at 1:51 UT) puts a "turning point" barely half a day after the New Moon—it's a couple of days of newness and change. With both signatures in mutable signs, "feeling your way" to success is possible. But with Uranus' turn happening just after the Moon passes Ixion (by about an hour) also says there's a little emotional glitchiness in the air!

The degree of Uranus' station—26 Pisces—is one known for defensiveness regarding material security. Yet with the greater metaphysical aim being one which challenges us to gain perspective on ourselves, that's the real issue. So regardless of what this moment "seems" to be about, start there. Why do you feel the way you do—about things, what you're entitled to, about your feelings on all which is going on now?

With planetary stations getting a 2-day leeway before and after, Uranus' station effects are still in play as Mars enters Capricorn on December 7 at 11:50pm UT (remember to adjust times given to a local time zone!). Like Mercury in Capricorn, Mars in Capricorn is about accomplishments and focusing on needs. There's a "durability" and perseverance which tends to go with Mars in Capricorn—and after all the sticky sluggishness of the past few months we will all like as not revel in that now. FINALLY… something can get done!

But no, it isn't that simple. (Big sigh….) And why not? Well, that would be because as Mars enters Capricorn, the Moon stands at 13 Capricorn. Yes, this is a little bit about the idea that Moon in Capricorn tends to be needy when it would benefit by nurturing. And it's a little bit about how hardheaded and bit-in-the-teeth stubborn Capricorn Moon willful haste can truly be. But that's not the point.

What's the point then? It's just this: in the moment that Mars enters Capricorn, the Moon is at the exact degree of the incoming January Solar Eclipse. That's sort of the celestial equivalent of "opening of the flood gates" to the infamous "breakdown effects" associated with the weeks which precede any solar eclipse. The more closely the January eclipse aspects your chart, obviously the stronger you will "sense" things beginning to shift. But even with nothing within range of aspect to the January eclipse, this eclipse being conjunct Vega (charismatic ideas) suggests a change in the world and worldly attitudes.

Plus let's not forget…as this happens, Mercury is closing in on a station/retrograde moment which occurs on December 10 at 12:05 (UT). In going retrograde at 5 Capricorn, Mercury "echoes" events which took place earlier this year as Pluto moved into 5 Capricorn at the tail end of March, went retrograde at 5 Capricorn in early April and didn't get its dwarf planet mass out of 5 Capricorn until the middle of May. Remember that?

Hardly a one of us went through that time feeling untouched or unaffected. The degree 5 Capricorn is known as being about "inner wealth" and "working in obscurity" (personal integrity). And when Pluto's "let me unearth that gusher of a feeling" wavelength hit that zone, it set off explosions of transformational emotional. Much like the Deepwater Horizon disaster of that time, such events defied containment—a very Pluto-type manifestation.

It was a turning point in "corrupted containment"…one we've been sorting out and through and with ever since. Financially, societally and personally, the costs have been enormous. And just when we thought things were settled, the Pluto-process (the retrograde cycle) erupted in some other part of our lives. Even Pluto's going direct in September didn't bring real relief—it merely brought a lot of problems to the surface…along with the reality of their causes. Being this is Pluto we're talking about, the "reality" and the "cause" were probably separate, but those able to get beyond the emotion (as Pluto requires) to why we were in a position for events to "trigger" such emotional reactions in us…those people have by now sort of gotten a clue.

Those who have will now begin moving forward in a new set of contemplations. Those who haven't will again face factors born of that original April/Pluto station.

Changes, considerations and efforts are not easily dealt with, though those who have figure "it" out and begun getting to the "trigger causes" will be at least slowly gaining ground. For others…? Watch out! Mars-North Node-Pluto-Mercury lined up in the early degrees of Capricorn signal that things could get nasty. Relationships with others, with society, in society—they may now manifest every dark color of emotion humanly possible.

Then again, this may be a purging of ill choices, behaviors and activities and a clarifying of the path ahead. With Saturn, ruler of Capricorn in Libra and conjunct Niobe, pride may run high and hot. But so will the cost of same. Like Ixion, where we see Niobe we see pride followed by a fall into all-too-human grief for "personal capital" spent.

And there's a Solar Eclipse coming in, remember?

As Mercury retrogrades back into Sagittarius on the 18th (meeting up with Pallas and Lachesis), we get a moment of recognition (Pallas) on how things cannot go on as they have (Lachesis). Something's going to give—and that giving in, out, over, or to begins on the 19th as Venus conjuncts Atropos (endings), then exits the shadow of its recent retrograde on the 20th. With the exiting of this shadow being in opposition to Sabine (being enslaved) we either realize what we have done to ourselves or we recognize what we will need to do to redeem ourselves in our world, the world…or maybe just in our own eyes.

That this all evolves and evokes deep feelings (public or private) becomes apparent as the Lunar Eclipse at 29 Gemini on December 21 (at 8:18 UT) reveals many things to us and others. With Pallas (wisdom) in an opposition to the Moon here, this is the proverbial "facing of our feelings"…or of that which provokes them. The wisest choice involves knowing our limits—especially as the Sun enters Capricorn at 11:40pm (UT) on that very same day. But let's face it—we all tend to go overboard at Lunar Eclipse times!

Interestingly, Mars moves through 13 Capricorn (the degree of January's Solar Eclipse) on the 24th/25th of December (depending on where you are). There's a great desire to know "where we stand" at this moment, but that isn't about to become apparent until on or just after December 30, when Mercury goes direct at 19 Sagittarius (at 7:22 UT) and Neptune is finally done with a transit begun back in May 2009 of 26 Aquarius…the degree Neptune was in when discovered by Galileo.

The lore on 19 Sagittarius is about alternative healing, against which we have ordeals of various kinds which in essence necessitate all that healing. Very cosmic cause/effect, yes. Neptune finally moving off its discovery point allows us all to move on in a world which itself is now ready to move on. That seems a note of good news…though there still is much yet which we will have to individually and collectively "eclipse." We all need healing. We have wounds yet to contend with. But at least now we can see the light at the end of the woods. We can see it…and now we all head towards that light.
