M A R C H 2 0 0 4 In the Northern Hemisphere, March is the month of spring’s arrival, when we shift from the cold, dark days of winter to the bright, hopeful days of spring. The migrating birds begin their return, winter tree buds are ready to burst with new life, and fresh plants are peeking through the ground, often under the snow. In the sea, too, sea mammals are migrating to and from breeding grounds, algae is blooming anew, and tiny diatoms are responding to the light with their life-giving green cells.
