Mayan Metaphysics

Mayan Leaf Magic

From the Mayan perspective, this is a season to realign with our purpose, a process that has special, cosmic significance in 2012, enriched by the forces of divine intuition and order.

For the Mesoamerican ancients, the symbol of the cross was key to accessing the sublime, and with its symmetry in mind, they named what is called in Spanish the equihelio, an abstract or theoretical calculation that refers to the midpoint between the perihelion—when Father Sun is closest to the earth 13 days after the Winter Solstice—and the aphelion, when he is farthest, 13 days after Summer Solstice.

By adding the post-equinoctial complement to the wheel of the year, the cardinal cross of the seasons remains symmetrical. In its springtime facet, the inner essence of the Sun shines like the feathers of the Quetzal (pronounced "kate-SALL"), a bird of brilliant colors whose name means sacred or precious.

According to native spiritual practice, the spring equihelio offers a chance to restore symmetry to our lives, as we review and realign with our purpose. It’s interesting to note that it falls on or around Palm Sunday, for the Mayans a time of new leaves, whose energy guides our own incipient process of manifestation.

This April brings a rare conjunction of Venus and the Pleiades, which is the first of a series of aspects involving the main lights of the Mesoamerican sky during 2012. As noted in this space three months ago, Venus is the most beloved of Mayan planets after Earth, associated with Kukulcán ("coo-cool-KAHN"), the wind spirit (the concept of “god” was not part of their philosophy).

Venus shines with special brightness in Maya-hab (land of Mayas), “and is helpful in developing solar qualities such as spiritual luminescence, intelligence and transcendence.... As for the Pleiades, another Mayan standout, they are associated with cosmic order, the organizing force that allows us to complete our true purpose."

The work

April´s metaphysical preparation is best done in nature, or, on the days that you can’t, in the presence of a plant or plants that is receiving sunlight. Have copal or floral incense on hand.

  • Light the incense as you say,

This is an offering for the essences of the Sun which shine forth like the bright feathers of the Quetzal (a type of parrot) with the glory of Spring, I invite you to help me see and connect with my intentions that grow as this plant.

Take a few moments to consider the goals and purpose you had at New Year’s, and what you may need to do to get back on track with your purpose.

  • As you breathe slowly and deeply, observe the leaves, feel their essence, and for several moments think about how they pushed through the earth from the kernel of life contained in the seed.

  • Continue to connect with the plant, as you relate this process to the kernel of your intention that, once seeded in your mind, is unfolding into a miracle of manifestation. If you have more than one main purpose or goal for the year, repeat this visualization for each one.

  • See and feel the leaves continue to grow strong as they transmute the sunlight into new life, know that the light of your creative intent and all the cosmos is also fortifying your miracles.

  • Repeat words like those that follow during ten minutes:

Just as the Sun’s rays call the miracle of these leaves forth, the solar angels spin my miracles from the unlimited potential of belief, fortifying my achieving will power to visualize, focus and act on them persistently until they are complete.

Infinite Intelligence knows the highest path for my manifestation, and it also knows how to guide me in it, and it does this through Its infinite channels and with Its almighty means here and now.

My intentions, and that of all beings on earth, respond to spiritual law, so they manifest in divine order now.

Meditations like this can be done daily throughout April, and is best accompanied by dream work—writing down and interpreting your dreams for direction each morning—which is one of the most striking channels through which Kulkulcán, and the divine powers of intuition, will continue to guide your steps into the springtime of a new earth.
